Chub can (8.45oz) canned at OEC/B. United, undated, drunk 11/10/23. Clear, dark soy with burgundy tints. Small, tan head quickly runs for the edges. Maple, molasses, treacle, soy, light vanilla and a hint of whiskey. These things never have too much of the whiskey but I guess that's the price paid for large quantities. Some nice dark berries and not much prune, thankfully. No booze. Spicy finish with baker's chocolate and deep black pepper. Tobacco, ash, oxidation, soy, very fruity with caramel and dark fruits exploding on the ash-littered finish. Again, not enough whiskey to entice and too much dark fruit. Body is medium-full, I wouldn't say all that rich or motor oil-like, though at least it's not thin. I suppose it is only 8% after all.

330ml bottle. Darkest brown colour with small to average, frothy, fading, beige head. Minimally peaty, chocolately, dark malty and caramel malty aroma, notes of dark caramel, Bourbon, some treacle, a touch of toffee. Taste is sweet-ish, dark malty, caramel malty, slightly ashy and minimally peaty, notes of caramel, some toffee, dark caramel, Bourbon, a touch of old motor oil. Slightly oily, watery texture, smooth and soft, simultaneously minimally dry palate, medium to fine, scattered, soft carbonation. Earthy, oily, nice dirty aspects - good.

Keg at the Guildford Arms. Pours clear golden with a thin white head. Aromas of light corn and grass. Tar is refreshing. Light lemon bitter finish.

330ml bottle. Pours an opaque black with a small, creamy, long lasting, beige head that laces. Aroma of roasted malt, dark chocolate, earth and coffee. Sweet flavour of roasted malt, dark chocolate, licorice, oats and a hint of smoke in a dry, mild bitter coffee finish. Medium body with an oily texture and soft carbonation. Tasty and enjoyable.

Cask at Square Peg, Birmingham. Pours golden yellow with a small white head and good lacing. The aroma has floral hops and some malty hints. Malts more to the fore in the mouth at the start alongside oranges and some hints of cocoa. Pretty soon though floral hops come to dominate plus traces of mango, spices and herbs – leading to a slightly spicy finish. It’s reasonable - I would call it a Best Bitter though, not a Red Ale.

Soft deep dark beginning. Very dry, caramel, bitter sweet. Deep, grain, dark. Burned coffee, very dry, deep roasty. Great deep dark caramelly roasted finish.

330mL bottled Sep 2014, bottle #17287, drunk 9/9/23. Clear dark mahogany. Small, dark beige head quickly to edge. Smells mellow, moderately oxidized, no big whiskey, just gentle smoke, caramel, toffee... Soft, old, moderately oxidized, but you can tell this is a pleasant, easygoing, mellow beer with simple, sweet toffee, chocolate and peat notes. Light vanilla. Wouldn't mind some assertiveness from the whiskey to jazz things up a bit, but my expectations are pretty low for a 9 year-old 330mL bottle that has likely sat warm it's whole life.
