Description
When we started making brilliant, innovative beer back in 1983, the craft beer thing was just a glint in Harvie’s eye. Now, more than 35 years later, we are proud to be the forefathers of this movement to better beer. Harviestoun is a proud, family-run business, our Chairmen Sandy Orr and Donald MacDonald champion a dedication to the craft that produces award-winning, natural brews made using the finest ingredients and purest Scottish water.

Founded in 1983 by Ken Brooker, the Scottish brewery has grown steadily to become renowned for their award winning beers. Head brewer, Stuart Cail, joined Harviestoun in 1995. Over the years the brewery has found new and innovative ways to create truly unique beers from their whisky cask aged Old Engine Oil to Bitter and Twisted, aged in Gin and Pinot Noir barrels.

Cask handpull at Guildford Arms, Edinburgh. Gold, lasting white head. Typical Harviestoun beer with good citrus flavours from the addition of (I’m guessing here) Liberty Hops. Good sherberty hoppy beer.

Aroma of dark malts, dark fruit, and mysterious alcohol. It’s opaque black, but halogen brings out ruby hilites. The tan head ringed, but left lace tatters at the edges. Full bodied; mild, creamy, carbonation. It has the dark toasted malt of a stout, the sweetness of something indescribable, some coffee, some puckery smokey notes (from the barrels?), some astringency, and, arguably, some pruney, raisin impact. It is quite the ale. Yummy. A great sipper in the late evening.

Bottle, Many thanks to Craig aka Cgarvieuk for picking this up for me I’ve had this before but never rated so was quite chuffed that Craig had picked one up for me. Poured as black as it’s name describes with just the tiniest of beige heads to top off. Aroma slightly bitter and sour but also some sweetness as well. First taste was wonderful, really quite indulgent and even though it was 6% it really was an ale that you needed to sip to get maximum enjoyment, molasses, chocolate, dark fruits even some burnt wood, it was all in there in this very lovely beer.

Nice golden appearance with only a small amount of head. Lager-esque aroma, quite zesty and hoppy. Flavour was somewhere between a continental lager and a British golden ale, hoppy flavours as well as some citric ones. The slightest aftertaste of yeast-extract. Pretty good.

bottle - Pours very dark brown with a two finger tan head that has some legs. The aroma is of roast malt and chocolate, though as it warms it smells more boozy. The flavor is chocolate roast malt and mild but quite noticeable whiskey notes. Full bodied and well balanced, this beer is quite enjoyable.
