Slightly better than average Pale Ale. Some of the strongest hops flavor I have ever experienced. Is that the norm for West Coast Pales? Crisp with a nice finish.

Golden colour, slightly hazy. Medium bodied, perhaps not as dry as you'd expect from a pilsenr, rather bitter finish. (This note dates back to 1998 though.)

Black coloured with a rich brownish head. Loads of salty liquorice in the aroma. Chocolate flavour. Ful bodied, so full bodied that you don't think about the high alcohol contents. Aromatic hop aroma, salty finish. This is indeed a very good beer, but to give it an even higher rating I'd like to see even more malt, and perhaps a tad fruitiness.

Once again I find North Coast to be barely average. I've yet to have anything from them that I find to be interesting - most ends up pretty watery. This beer has some weizenbock like traits - a slight lemon zest spiciness primarily - but not much else. Slightly sour, but eventually finishable.

Dark amber, with little head and a mild carbonation; Aroma like cognac, although a few of us were tasting this and arguing over which kind of spirit we were smelling. Smooth palate, as the malts wash over you. I've never had a beer this big with Maris Otter before. Warming, complex and delicious. A fireside ale.

I have to laugh at my earlier newbie rating of this beer. I said it was like a "toned down Bigfoot!" Huh? I was on drugs. This gives me the impression of a nice unassuming British influenced pale ale. The aroma features a caramelized butterscotch and toasted almond, with a mild floral and lemon-citric (Golding?) hop presence. Flavor is generally rounded with malts, but the hops provide balance. Medium palate, soft. Amber color with medium head. Down from 4.1, but still nice.

This is really more of a blonde ale than a pale ale. Light golden color, slight head. Light to med body with a general sweetish flavor, and nicely balanced hopping. Generally no hop flavor.
