Description
Sometime before 1698 one Andries Van Doorselaer started renting a brewery next to the church in Steenhuffel; however, he was able to open his own brewery when he purchased the De Hoorn property across the street in 1706. In 1801 De Hoorn is sold by public auction to Jan Baptist De Mesmaecker and Clara Bastaerts. In 1908, his daughter Henriette De Mesmaecker married Arthur Van Roy, a descendant of a brewing family from Wieze.

Arthur kick-started the brewery’s industrial development in order to sell his beers far beyond the borders of the municipality. He also created his own “Spéciale Belge” brew. In 1929, Arthur Van Roy gave his “Spéciale Belge” the brand name “Spéciale PALM”. The brewery continued to grow before and after the second World War.

In 2014 Palm Breweries is renamed Palm Belgian Craft Brewers. A new micro-brewery is opened in order to experiment with new combinations of herbs, spices, hops, fruit and wood, and is named in honour of De Hoorn. At 10 hl, the capacity of the micro-brewery is almost exactly the same as that of the village brewery of days gone by.

On 9 May 2016, the Dutch brewery Bavaria N.V. (Swinkels Family Brewers) bought a majority stake in the company. Bavaria initially bought 60% of the shares and will expand this to 100% in 2021.

draft@bowling: totally shitty and crap tasting pilsner, on par or even below Maes, looks like it is made by Palm, ta-da, Palm has a pretty big distribution here, I have been seeing this one popping up more, I hope that it doesn’t become big or common or anything

bottle from Vinoble-favrskov clear caramelly brown, smooth small offwhite head. aroma is not sourish but sort of flowery-citrussy slightly sourish, caramel. faint nutty. flavor is caramelly, flowery, straight bitter. slightly bitter dry malty. reminds me not so much of belgian brews, rather german ones with the dryness and "straightness" of flavor.

06/03/2011 - on tap @ Zythos Beer Festival (2011-91)

Cloudy amber to beige beer, creamy white big head. Aroma: yeast, caramel, bready, banana peel. MF: ok carbon, medium body. Taste: caramel, very bready yeast, hops, some citrus, bit fruity. Aftertaste: toasted malts, hops, some apple skin. Man, why would anyone ever want a regular Palm after having tasted this?

On tap. Poured a clear amber gold with a white head that dissipated slowly to the edges. Aroma was quite earthy with grains, grass and hay coming through as well as a bit of dough. Flavor started with earthy bread, dough and grain with some grass in the finish as well as a bit of hay.

(can) clear medium amber colour with tall light tan head; aroma starts sweet, candy, then progresses towards funk; taste is simple but unoffensive and balanced, with long medium bitter finish

Bottle @ Henrik, Bergen. Pours a medium bronze/dark pale semi cloud body with a thin lacing head. Faint note with little flavors, some yeast and thin hops, but not much. Decent carbonated and thin bodied. Some faint citrus hints and a weak caramel. Not bad but for me this was boring.

Bottle from Beermerchants. Clear copper brown colour. Lasting thick white head. Some yeast some caramel some hop on aroma. It?s a bit like a British bitter to be honest. Touch metallic on the finish. Wont win best Belgian Ale competitions. Its drinkable enough but has a bit of an odd flavour on end. Lacks flavour and character. Its mostly inoffensive 2.7/5 On tap at The Hop Stuff Tap room Ashford Belgian esters. good malt biscuit. light bitterness. likeable.
