Description
Sometime before 1698 one Andries Van Doorselaer started renting a brewery next to the church in Steenhuffel; however, he was able to open his own brewery when he purchased the De Hoorn property across the street in 1706. In 1801 De Hoorn is sold by public auction to Jan Baptist De Mesmaecker and Clara Bastaerts. In 1908, his daughter Henriette De Mesmaecker married Arthur Van Roy, a descendant of a brewing family from Wieze.
Arthur kick-started the brewery’s industrial development in order to sell his beers far beyond the borders of the municipality. He also created his own “Spéciale Belge” brew. In 1929, Arthur Van Roy gave his “Spéciale Belge” the brand name “Spéciale PALM”. The brewery continued to grow before and after the second World War.
In 2014 Palm Breweries is renamed Palm Belgian Craft Brewers. A new micro-brewery is opened in order to experiment with new combinations of herbs, spices, hops, fruit and wood, and is named in honour of De Hoorn. At 10 hl, the capacity of the micro-brewery is almost exactly the same as that of the village brewery of days gone by.
On 9 May 2016, the Dutch brewery Bavaria N.V. (Swinkels Family Brewers) bought a majority stake in the company. Bavaria initially bought 60% of the shares and will expand this to 100% in 2021.

Poured from a 750ml dark green bottle, topped with a cork and a wire cradle. Unclear golden, filmy layer on the surface. Mild spiced fruits to the nose. Blended flavour of tart and sweet fruits. A bit tea-like taste. Discreet notes of yeast. Soft and rounded in the mouth (thanks to Finn for sharing, Romjuls party, Tromsø 27.12.2009).

Reddish copper color, white head and great lacing. Caramel and malt aroma, maybe a bit over the top, but interesting. Butterscotch flavor with light spice and pine cleanser (but in a good way). Good body for the style. Despite the poor opinions, this is an interesting, warming and drinkable winter beer.

Pack of 4 x 25cl bottles from Tesco at a stated ABV of 5.5%. Having read the other recent reviews, I agree that picking this up in Tesco was the wrong thing to do - even though it was the only beer there I hadn’t tried. Slightly disconcerting aroma of mass-produced cider; the texture of a damp flannel; over sweet, and with some stale hops and an alcoholic burn to finish. Some resemblance to Palm, but it very much the poor cousin.

On draught at Bar Vanna in Cassela, Italy. This brew is a clear golden color with a medium foamy white head that recedes steadily. Thin rings of lacing on the glass. Fruity aroma with notes of malt and yeast. Medium body with a fruity character and flavors of earthy malt and yeast. The finish is somewhat tart and fruity and lingers for a bit. Just average overall.

Tap @William K, Helsinki. Pours copper, reddish color with a nice creamy white head. Hard to find any aroma at first, after a while I could notice fruits and perfume. Quite sweet taste with some caramel and malt. Finishes dry. Probably won´t be trying this one again.
