Description
Launched in 2010, Notch Brewing – named for the nick made to keep a record when you're having more than one – was the first brewing company in the U.S. to focus exclusively on session beer. At the time, we simply wanted to brew the beers we loved to drink because finding them was a challenge. Session beer has been enjoyed in every great beer brewing nation for centuries, yet in the U.S. it was overlooked. So we set out to brew the world’s classic session styles from the Czech Republic, Germany, England, and Belgium, as well as explore how session beer could fit with the U.S.’s hoppy beer infatuation. Over a decade later, we have a brewery built on the back of session beer and it’s proven two things: beer consumers like options, and session beer is a great one.

Pours clear gold into a shaker. Bright white head with excellent retention recedes leaving spider lacing. Cracked malt and clean earth aromas. Soft and creamy with sweet caramel and hay upfront turning to dry sourdough and pepper in the lasting finish. Turns more fruity as it warms.

Draught at Trillium, Roslindale, 2/3/18.
Copper-to-light amber with a slight chill haze and a medium-sized, white head showing moderate retention.
Big cascade-and-citra-like nose. Green, fresh, clean and clear. Melon and peach from something like El Dorado, perhaps. Malt perks up, adding lots of bread with a slight twangy yeast and hop combo on the very end that somewhat dulls the brightness here.
In the mouth it's soft and malty, yet very dry with low, but ample carbonation. Crackery, strong, grainy popcorn-like texture on the finish. Just too dry and overattenuated. Some rich malt tones would do wonders here. Bitterness is still low and pleasing, at least and the nose is absolutely killer. Clean, as well, with no alcohol.

Draught at Trillium, Roslindale, 2/3/18. Clear, copper-peach. Medium-sized head slowly fades to cover. Smells great! Clean mineral, yellow fruit, not too much sourdough but still clearly-expressed malt depth. Lots of apple is initially a bit odd/off-putting, but it's not acetaldehyde and seems to be just a house property of the mineral-rich yeast. In the mouth it's more apple and light sourdough, with light hop bitterness following. Malty initially, though drying out heavily, to a grainy, almost scratchy, finish. Clean, with no alcohol. Carbonation moderate, mostly engaging. Another, full Lukr pour at Brighton. Yeah, love that heirloom-like yeast but it's just a BIT too dry, borderline scratchy in the malt category, despite the creamy Lukr treatment.

Crowler filled and drunk 1/13/18.
Clear, dark chestnut-mahogany. Creamy, thick, dark beige head atop shows moderate-to-strong retention.
Sweet maple, fudge and good malt acidity help keep balance in the nose, though it certainly still tends to the sweet and malty. Vanilla, hazelnut, dark chocolate and light buttercream all add to the complexity and there is no alcohol or flaw noted.
In the mouth it's sweet, lightly, but pleasingly syrupy, with tons of maple, treacle, raisin, vanilla, buttercream and light fudge. A bevy of malt variation, with mild acidity on the end and low but engaging carbonation. Still shows decent attenuation with roast growing somewhat stronger as it warms, helping ward off the fudgey, chocolatey sweetness. Very unique and interesting and, I think, successful. A 3.3% dessert stout? Definitely makes you wonder why so many breweries feel the need for 10% + abvs in their versions....

Draught at the brewery, 1/13/18.
Lightly-to-minimally hazy, bright bronze-golden. Medium-sized white head slowly recedes to cover.
Mineral and sulfur show both yeast and hop as passion fruit and guava notes slowly but steadily emerge, showcasing the hop more clearly. Great strength of aroma, especially for its size, with no resin, alcohol or flaw. Malts in the background are fairly sparse, showing basic biscuit/cracker qualities.
In mouth it's light, very dry and shows a soft, malty texture. Lemon-lime and lots of passion fruit with rustic, funky, sulfur-rich notes from the hop. Crisp, grainy with snappy pineapple-lemon, bright and only lightly bitter on the finish. Excellent stuff and a wonderful expression of this hop.

Cask at the brewery, 1/13/18.
Off-white head fades steadily to cover. Clear mahogany showing a good condition overall.
Smells very fruity and sweet with light chocolate, caramel and honey showing a varied malt profile. Very soft and even and quite clean again.
Yet again it's got a great texture, attenuation, carbonation, etc....with lightly roasty tinges and soft caramel and vanilla. Low hop character, light mineral-like yeast and lingering caramel.

Draught at the brewery, 1/13/18.
Clear amber, lovely condition, with a huge, off-white head that shows strong retention.
Bread and caramel show both base and specialty malt, while not being overdone on the latter. Some fruitiness from malt shows through with lingering caramel and very light mineral-like yeast softness on the end. No alcohol or flaw.
Dry, fruity, clean and drinkable in the mouth with mineral-like lager yeast. Ultra clean, yet not "sterile" feeling; just well-lagered. Light apple and herbal notes grace the finish with tight, ample carbonation and good attenuation. Very soft, malty texture. Not terribly familiar with the style, but pretty surprised at the lower ratings as I thought this was excellent, bright, malty, dry and clean.

4 oz. draft at The Grog, Newburyport, MA. Unclear golden appearance. Aroma is hay, old grass, grain. The flavor straw, old mosaic, and weak caramel hints. br>
The mouthfeel was chewy, oats I guess. I don’t know how long the keg sat but it didn’t have a fresh character.
