Description
Grolsch was first brewed in Groenlo in 1615 by Willem Neerfeldt. Peter Cuyper, son-in-law of Neerfeldt, was appointed master of the Grolsche brewing guild in 1676. Cuyper died in 1684, after which his descendants continued the business. Until 1876, the beer was brewed in the center of Groenlo. In that year brewery 'De Klok' built a new brewery outside the city. In 1895 it was bought by Theo de Groen, a descendant of a Zevenaar brewing family.

The De Groen family has upgraded the company from 1968 from a local brewery to an international company. Until 2004, Grolsch was brewed in Groenlo and Enschede. Since 2004, both locations have been closed and there is a new brewing factory in Boekelo-Usselo.

On 19 November 2007 the board of Royal Grolsch NV accepted a €816 million offer for the company by SABMiller. The takeover was completed with the delisting of Grolsch's shares on 20 March 2008. SABMiller subsequently sold the company to Anheuser-Busch InBev and in April 2016, the latter accepted Asahi Group Holdings Ltd.’s offer to buy not only Grolsch but also the Peroni and Meantime beer brands.

Bottle Yes can’t really add too much more than anyone else. It is mass produced lager with a bit of flavour.

Pretty aged sample Compact, but fluffy head, leaving some lace, and with a strange pistacchio shine; dark amber beer. Vanilla, spices, earth and very malt-sweet nose. Portwine, wood, and a glimpse of sourishness, all overflowed by a rather oppressive sweet liquorice flavour. Somehow I get pistacchio (no salt). Is it suggested by the colour of the head, or is there really something there? Caramel and cucumber (that sounds really British). Rather slick, but not very much body. Aftertaste leaves a lot of sweetness. Not really great - wasn’t great when young neither.

Clear golden color, short white head. Aroma of hops, some grain, bit artificial Taste is sweet and watery. Definitely not the new legend Grolsch wants it to become...

Crystal clear light golden coloured body with a frothy pale white head with tons of bubbles rising from the bottom & sides of the glass. Aroma of skunk, pale malt, a light stale hoppiness, some foul sugars and very light fruit - overall not good at all. Super-light-bodied; Mild maltiness, with water being the strongest taste in this one. Aftertaste is completely non-existant - this one is absolutely bland. Overall, if a watery, light beer is desired go with this one - it is ’better’ than Sam Adams light, and of course any of the BMC products. Overall, a beer that tastes like water - I could drink this in a marathon race and be fine for the duration. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Total Wine in McLean, Virginia on 01-March-2005.

Dark ruby color, vanishing head. Gold coffee and roasted malts in the aroma. Light to medium bodied. Sweetish with some roasted/coffee flavors. A bit like Nokian Panimo’s Christmas brew.

Canned. Yep, canned, like might have been served on a KLM airliner. Gives us a chance to try it with the skunkiness of the green bottle. Now I can taste some hop character. But still not much beyond a pale lager.
