Description
Terrapin Beer Co. was born when two brewers met while working together at a microbrewery in Atlanta. Spike and John felt they could make a contribution to the burgeoning Southeastern craft beer scene. Realizing that anyone could make another basic pale ale, brown ale, or stout, Spike and John set their sights on creating beers unlike any that were currently available in the Southeast.
Unique beers needed a unique location and what better place than Athens, GA? Home to the University of Georgia, Athens has a rich culture of music, food, classic Southern charm, and more than a little eclectic attitude. Spike and John knew from the start that the Classic City would be Terrapin’s home.
The guys introduced Terrapin’s first beer, Terrapin Rye, in April of 2002. While still available only on draft and only in downtown Athens, this sole offering won the American Pale Ale Gold Medal at the 2002 Great American Beer Festival. At only six months old, Terrapin had arrived in style!
History rolls forward and so too has Terrapin. These days John and Spike are enjoying Terrapin’s 40,000 square foot brewing facility, 100 BBL brewing system, and are taking full advantage of the space to continue bringing innovative and exciting brews to craft beer lovers. The brewery now has a portfolio of 5 year-round beers, 4 Seasonal Sessions beers, the Monster Beer Tour collection of high-gravity selections, and the Side Project series of one-time brewing improvisations, as well as several Special Releases and collaborations annually. Terrapin has developed a reputation for high-quality beers that push the boundaries of creative brewing and has garnered several awards both in the U.S.A and internationally.

Tea and orange peel nose. Clear amber, medium head. Honey, orange peel, marigold, tea, grapefruit peel. Medium body, easy carbonation, resinous. Intense and complex. Tasty but it ruins the palate.

This beer proves I'm a sucker for labels, but especially for names. Depth perception is after all my academic area of expertise, so of course I'd have to drink a beer called that. I would otherwise consider scrolling past another DIPA, as I'm both more than a bit fatigued by high grav beers, and also big hops. We're in an era of over-hopped everything, even water, so I'm not excited. But hey, this is an old-school DIPA so that's cool. By that I mean its actually bitter, generally a clear copper color. Hops are mainly citrus and resin, a throwback to the early 2000s lol (like that was a long time ago...shit it was). Big malt body, plenty of caramel, with more citrus and resin hop flavors, and as noted, plenty of bitterness. Seems balanced at finish, I wanted to say semi-dry, but there's enough sweetness there to make me question that statement. Hard to judge really. So in the end, if you want a classic big DIPA, with a big malt body and plenty of bittering and finishing hops to stand up to it, then this is as good as any. But if you're tired of big beers and big hops, scroll past. For me? Shit I don't know, I'm just drinking.

Surprisingly good DIPA from Terrapin. Seems like the anti-Imperial NEIPA. Huge malt presence offers up plenty of caramel and orange marmalade notes, followed by candied grapefruit zest and peach. Finishes with a moderate pine bitterness. Pretty much exactly what I want from a DIPA. Damn, Terrapin. Nice work.

12 oz. can, 9.1% ABV, Best By Date: Sep, 26 2022

AROMA: I'm first hit with something sweet and floral that I can't quite identify (jasmine??). Following that, I get scents of pine, hops, and oranges. The aroma is quite pleasant and maintains its level of odoriferousness, no matter if the beer is fresh out of the fridge, or has warmed up to room temperature. This is quite rare, as most beers have reduced aroma levels when they are cold, and then open up as the beer warms. But this beer is completely "open" as soon as you crack the tab on the can. I wish more beers were like this.

APPEARANCE: Pours a clear, medium brown (think iced tea) with a tall, khaki head that dissipates slowly and has good lacing.

TASTE: I am first hit with sweetness, which is followed by flavors of resin/pine, orange, and hops. The finish lingers for quite a while and is comprised mostly of hops and a tinge of orange. Note that, while I found the flavor to be surprisingly sweet for an IIPA, I didn't find it overwhelming or out of place.

MOUTHFEEL: Medium-bodied and slightly smooth on the palate. Carbonation is on the high end of what I would classify as "medium". Any more carbonation, and I would classify it as "high".

OVERALL: I picked this up as part of a BOGO that my local grocery store was running on Terrapin beer. I got a 6-pack of one of their beers that I know I like, and then picked up a 6-pack of this beer as my "free" beer. I really wasn't sure what to expect from this beer, but I figured I wasn't out anything if I didn't like it. Suffice it to say, that I'm pretty happy with my decision. Its heavenly aroma promises sweetness and its flavor delivers on that promise. Additionally, it is a very smooth and drinkable beer that goes down easy, and tastes great. Which, given its high ABV, could make things a bit dicey as it will be hard to restrain yourself from treating this like a session beer, and downing several in one sitting.

12 oz. can from Publix. Pours a crystal clear amber gold color with a khaki head and good retention. Good lacing. Strong piney hops aroma. The taste follows the nose. Strong and bitter hops flavors throughout. Just another hops bomb. The 9.1% ABV is surprisingly well hidden. Medium body with a drying finish. Tick.

12oz. can, 6.1% ABV

AROMA: Heavenly scents of brown sugar and milk chocolate, with hints of coffee.

APPEARANCE: Pours an (almost black) dark brown, with a tall, tightly packed, dark brown head that dissipates slowly with medium lacing.

TASTE: I first taste sweetness, quickly followed by milk and chocolate. Then I get hints of coffee and brown sugar. The finish is long and consists mainly of the stout's coffee and brown sugar flavors. Although you still get some of the milk chocolate sweetness coming through too.

MOUTHFEEL: This is a full-bodied beer with a luxuriously smooth texture and slightly higher than average carbonation.

OVERALL: The flavor of the beer leans more heavily towards the milk chocolate than the stout. I tend to prefer it when milk chocolate stouts are more stout-forward, but in this case, I find I really like the milk chocolate being the star. And while it may be the star, it is not overpowering, as there is still plenty of supporting stout flavor. Add to that the incredibly enticing aromas and body, and you have a really nice beer! It's a shame that the can says this is a "Seasonal Sessions Limited Release", as I would probably buy this year round. Oh well, I guess that will give me an opportunity to try some of their other beers, as I have yet to be disappointed by them.
