In the period after 1850, the De Meester-Boelens brewery was founded at the current address in the Kerkstraat. in 1897 the name changed to Boelens-De Meester. Brewing stopped during World WarI, after the war the family continued the business as a bottling and beer enterprise. In 1978 Kris Boelens took over the beer business from his father. 33 cl. bottle @ home. Procured from Willems. Label looks like a kid’s drawing. Text on the back on the bottle seems to state that this is actually a witbeer. BBF 20/01/2014. Pours orange with a creamy white head. Nose is full citrus, touch dishwashing liquid like but not heavily, hoppy, some wheat, smells not badly, expected something terrible given the score on here. Taste is bitter floral, citrus, bitter hops, EU ones but agreeable, light medicinal / EU hops taste, bitter citrus peel, heavy esters, grass, quite bitter, herbal, touch booze. Something synthetic about it but not too heavy / quite weird but definitely not as bad as the score suggests here. Increases greatly once warmed up and you get quite used to it. It is quite nice actually. Maybe the recipe for this was recently improved or some issues fixed or something. Lots of carb, almost sparkling.

Bottle at the RBESG 2013 Grand Tasting. Poured a cloudy light brown with a frothy tan head. The aroma is fruity with some grassy hops in the background. The flavour is medium bitter, hoppy, some spice and smooth malty, liqourice notes in the finish.

Slightly hazy bronze coloured body with a bit of a copper glow and a fast-dying just off-white head. As soon as bottle was cracked, tons of carbonation came spilling out for 30 seconds. Aroma of funky malt, tons of yeast, bread, alcohol, metal and some light fruits. Medium-bodied; Assertive effervescence; Pungent malt and alcohol flavours with a very strong bite at the end and some light yeast coming through. Aftertaste shows even more alcohol warmth, some light spice notes and the smallest amount of sweetness. Overall, a rather strong and pungent beer with the malt, alcohol and metal coming through way too much and not enough focus or complexity. Decent to try, but wish I would have packed a different beer. I sampled this 33 cL bottle purchased from Bier Tempel in Bruxelles, Belgium on 02-January-2011 for €1,75 sampled at home in Washington on the other side of the pond on 27-June-2013.

Bottle at DHVL. Dark brown liquid with medium to big light brown head. Aroma of biscuit, flowers, earthy hops, bread, light banana and light clove. Taste is light sweet and light to medium bitter with notes of flowers, biscuit and light belgian yeast esters. Medium bodied with medium to high carbonation. Really nice, great maltiness together with some hoppiness.
