Description
For years we brewed beers in our basement when we read an article in October 2010 about the Brouwland beer competition. We decided to risk our chances and sent our version of a Trappist beer, a dark beer, full malt, of 10%.In March 2011 we were informed that we were selected for the final. Beginning in April 2011 was ultimately the final. The seven finalist beers were tasted by beer connoisseurs, Zythologists Rijckers Anne and Yannick De Cocteau and some Belgian brew masters like Paul Arnott (Dubuisson), and Jean-Marie De Rock (Orval). The first beers were tasted and judged one for one, much was noted. Mutually there was not much talk together ,until they started our beer (the final seven beers were tasted in order of alcohol). All jurors began to talk to each other and two of them even gave us a thumbs up. Then, we knew it was good. After fifteen minutes of deliberations they announced the winner … Vliegend Paard Brouwers from Oedelem with their Préaris Quadrupel.

Bottle at home. Slight hazy amber with fluffy off white head. Brown sugar, yeast, grapefruit, kumquat, quite herbval, curry spices. Hard to describe, it seems a bit musty almost, paper or wood like, with dry old spices that have lost most of their flavor. Medium sweet, light bitterness. Medium bodied with full carbonation. Not really into it.

Medium to good lightly yellowish head over very lively carbonated, faintly veiled golden beer. Dull spicy nose, dull gains’ aroma, bit grassy, some citrus. Coriander, lightly bitter spices, finish is sweet pale malt. Again pretty dull. Wheatslickness; lively, spritzy carbonation; light to medium body. At least it didn’t turn out as coriandersoup, but the coriander increases in power warming up, destroying the enjoyment more and more.

Tasting at Matt’s; synthetic cork; bottle No. 02737, vintage 2014
Brown color, no head. Aroma of dates, raisins, dark fruits, then bourbon. Lean mouthfeel, very moderate sweetness; quite good malt flavor, the bourbon makes it taste like some kind of vanilla pudding. Low bitterness, a bit boozy.

375mL bottle, pours an opaque cloudy rusted red with a small white head. Aroma brings out lots of perfumey notes, some bourbon, with dark fruits and toffee further back. Flavour is similar, with dark fruits, toasted hazelnuts, bourbon and perfume. Odd but interesting mix of flavours. High on the perfumey notes, but they aren't too cosmetic-like. Good stuff.

Flaska från beernavigator. BBD 05/16.
