Description
For years we brewed beers in our basement when we read an article in October 2010 about the Brouwland beer competition. We decided to risk our chances and sent our version of a Trappist beer, a dark beer, full malt, of 10%.In March 2011 we were informed that we were selected for the final. Beginning in April 2011 was ultimately the final. The seven finalist beers were tasted by beer connoisseurs, Zythologists Rijckers Anne and Yannick De Cocteau and some Belgian brew masters like Paul Arnott (Dubuisson), and Jean-Marie De Rock (Orval). The first beers were tasted and judged one for one, much was noted. Mutually there was not much talk together ,until they started our beer (the final seven beers were tasted in order of alcohol). All jurors began to talk to each other and two of them even gave us a thumbs up. Then, we knew it was good. After fifteen minutes of deliberations they announced the winner … Vliegend Paard Brouwers from Oedelem with their Préaris Quadrupel.

Bottled, BB 02/07/15, large sample. Slight hazy golden to orange color, big frothy off-white head. Aroma of grassy hop, hint of grapefruit and pine, slight spicy, slight hint of grainy malt. Quite bitter in taste, fruity and spicy on the palate, quite dry. Palate is a bit harsh and unbalanced. Lacks some malty backbone and the dry spicyness gives away some alcohol as well. Belgian yeast notes are not that prominent, which is a good thing imo. So it becomes more of a fusion IPA. Pretty ok, but a bit harsh.

375 ml. corked & caged bottle @ home. Synthetic cork. Procured from De Hopduvel in Gent. Purchased upon recommendation from BoBoChamp. BBF 10/10/2016. Bottle nr. 187/2425. Light ruby, extremely dark brown, slightly blackish with a very creamy collapsing tanned head. Smells like coco puffs, milk chocolate, hint soy sauce, sweet cane sugar, woody & cognac,… Taste is lots of coco puffs soaking in chocolate milk, sweet milk chocolate, cane sugar, hint gravy, faint red grapes but no vinous notes like the 2 other reviewers noted, lots of chocolate cereal, this reminds me way more of a stout than a quad, sweetish cane sugar, warming cognac, oak, slight booze but in a good way. Way lighter body than you would expect. Price is very high, not sure if it worth it but it is very unique, really sets itself apart from the hoards of BA beers showing up there days on the market. It is pricey but very interesting, if you are okay with the cost I would definitely recommend this one, I will pick up the new variant next year when it comes out, great work guys.
