Description
Our Rare Bird Craft Beer is inspired by people of rare character – the neighbours who have shaped our home of Guysborough into the seaside village it is today. For centuries, they used their creative minds, hardworking hands and generous hearts to build a better life for their families and community. They’re people like Nicolas Denys, a pioneering Acadian who created Atlantic Canada’s first commercial brewery in 1659, right where we make our Rare Bird Craft Beer today. We’re proud to carry on Denys’ legacy and brew our beer for those with rare character.

Our commitment to Atlantic Canada’s oldest brewer means we handcraft our beer in small batches using no preservatives. We combine fresh ingredients with pure Glanbùrn artesian water for optimal flavour, creating year-round and seasonal brews that stay true to our constant values of good taste over time. Each bottle captures the history, flavour and rare character of our home on Nova Scotia’s remote Eastern Shore. Learn more about Guysborough’s proud brewing heritage and how our craft beers give you a taste of our unique seacoast spirit.

Can.

Roasty, good coffee flavor, light vanilla. Solid mouth feel, soft carb, medium bitter. Not terrible, but pretty middle of the road.

473mL can. Pours clear gold with a small white head. Not much on the nose. Flavour has some biscuit malts, damp straw. Not really much of anything going on here.

Tasting at Erik's
Hazy red-amber color; gushing bottle. Off smell, yeast; highly carbonated, harsh mouthfeel, too much yeast, covering the caramel and malt.
Infected.

Black color, small head. Strange aroma, rough, roasted malts, dust, stale. The flavor is anonymous, there is some caramel, not evident if it’s a Stout or a Porter, anyway there is a suspicious sourness that indicates infection.

Light brown. Very coffee nose. Tart, cherry, with a touch of sour coffee. Goes nowhere...faults.

650mL bottle, pours a deep dark brown / black with a small beige head. Aroma brings out toasted malt and dry coffee. Flavour brings out some light tartness, but there is almost enough body to mask, with coffee and dry toasted malt. It's alright overall, but there are some obvious discernible flaws. Decent, but flawed.

Dark amber, bit of haze. Thin head. The aroma is toasty with a little bit of hop fruitiness and a whiff of brettanomyces. There’s a bit of a chocolatey note, with more of that toastiness that seems to come from the rye. The hop aroma drops out, and there’s a fair bit of bitterness in the finish. The brett is kicking in, starting to thin the body out a bit, and lending...well...it’s a character that’s obviously not supposed to be there but I enjoy it anyway. A lucky accident, that we opened at just the right time.

500mL bottle, pours a hazy reddish amber with a small off-white head. Aroma brings out toasted malt and some stale bread. Flavour is along the same lines, with toasted malt and stale bread. Light bittering hops. Something a bit off here. Not feeling this.

On tap at the brewpub. Pours a clear deep gold with a white head that lasts throughout the beer and laces. Aroma has a decent amount of maple with some sweet grains and a straw backbone. Flavor combines maple and sweet grains with a bit of earthy straw underlying.
