Description
The Kuhnhenn Brewing Company is a small microbrewery, winery and meadery in Warren, Michigan, United States. They have several beers rated in the top 100 in the world on beeradvocate.com and ratebeer.com. The business was established in 1998, but did not open its doors until 2001, by owners and brewers, the brothers Bret and Eric Kuhnhenn.

The brewery sits on the corner of Mound and Chicago Road in the old Lutz hardware store which is owned by the Kuhnhenn family. The brothers started homebrewing when Eric went to college and was introduced to it. He brought the hobby home and introduced it to his brother Bret. Bret started selling homebrewing supplies from the hardware store and soon it became more profitable than selling hardware. The hardware component of the establishment did not disappear from the brewery until mid-2006.

The brewery uses converted equipment, the lauter tun was a peanut butter hopper from Quaker Oats cereal, the mash/boil kettle was a yeast starter for a sour dough bread company, their pilot system’s kettle was a 100-gallon coffee maker. They have a six kettle brew on the premises that allows them to make experimental beers.

The beers include Raspberry Eisbock, Winter Wonder Lager, Fourth Dementia, DRIPA and Simcoe Silly. The brothers brew about 80 different beers; most of these beers are small batches made for annual events. Kuhnhenn’s is also known for brewing seasonal and experimental strong beers.

Kuhnhenn Brewing Co. won a gold medal at the a World a Beer Cup for DRIPA (Double Rice IPA).

A satellite brewery (larger than the original, and with increased bottling capacity) has opened at 36000 Groesbeck Highway Clinton Township, Michigan 48035.

2004 draught. A highly experimental beer. Best fits in to amber ale, but it is quite unique. Pours a thick, HEAVILY clouded dark strawberry red with some light browns and oranges in the mix. It’s like watching a dry stout settle out after a pour. Good red tinged tan head. Smells wonderfully hoppy, lots of malt and light red fruit hints. Leafy and lightly earthy. Flavor is sweet at the beginning, with caramel malt and an almost vanilla iced cream sweetness. Light red raspberry hints and then a big burst of leafy, soily fresh hops. Tremendously fresh and not overdone. Balances perfectly against the malt, with a good bittersweet finish. Hints of pine and sap. The body is medium, but no thinning or wateriness and a moderate carbonation. Mouthfeel is soft, fuzzy and lightly chewy on the finish. Great brew, hopefully they keep making this one.

2004 draught. Mostly clear, light straw colored beer, with a decent foamy white head and good lacing. Smells very dry, of alcohol, light paint thinner, spicy hops, and a bittersweet acidity. Reminds me of vanilla flavored vodka too. Flavor is immediately very dry and astringent. Lots of warming alcohol, some light grain-like malt flavors, but no real sweetness. Touch of spicy hops on the finish add a nice flavor, but there is no real balance here, and too much of a ethanol/paint thinner quality, perhaps from the yeast or perhaps wheat malt(reminds me of the wheat wine). Medium body does not improve as it warms, though some light sweetness does peak through. Strange beer here.

2004 Draught at the brewery. Pours a light mahogany brown with some lighter dark yellow tinges. Small light-tan head, moderately clear. Smells of light malt, brown sugar, hints of hops and a soft round nuttiness. Flavor is lightly sweet (caramel malt, brown sugar) hints of dates and figs with a sweet nuttiness. Finish, despite being English, has some good lightly bitter hops, slightly piney. Medium body, soft carbonation, good balance, a bit too much acidity from the fresh hops, though this really isnt a bad thing, just uncharacteristic of the style.

2004 summer batch on tap. Light golden-yellow with some mild oranges, small foamy white head. Aroma is very light of malt, some hops spiciness and good crisp lager yeast. Flavor is similar, dry and crisp yeast mixes with some mildly earthy and spicy hops. As it warms and finishes, more malt sweetness emerges, but this is a very dry example of the style. No alcohol apparency, moderate complexity, mild carbonation with a medium body.

2004 batch on tap. Pours a tangerine orange with some lighter yellows and golds, good white head, lightly hazy appearance. Aroma has hints of light citrus, lots of fructose. Flavor is very sweet, good tangerine flavor, but it’s a bit much. The wit part seems drowned out especially, little yeast flavor, some light lemon, no coriander or citrus peel. Because they use fresh tangerine puree, it tastes good, but it just isnt much of a wit, should be much more subtle on the tangerine sweetness.

2004 bottle (this was only produced in bottles, contrary to what the below reviews say). This Belgian Dark strong pours a dark red with medium brown tinges. Light caramel colors as well. Good off-white head and tons of lacing. Bottle conditioned. Smells of raspberry puree, slight alcohol, more estery red fruits, light belgian yeast and hints of chocolate and caramel. Quite sweet and alcoholic, lightly bitter on the finish with chocolate covered raspberries in the mix. Medium-full body, light spritzy carbonation. Still young and rough around the edges, should smooth out nicely.

Re-rate from 2004 6.3 oz bottle.I sampled this as part of a tasting before but wanted to try it again on a fresh palate, and my impression of this beer changed. Caramely brown body with red hints, topped by a quickly dissipating light tan head. Caramely, pruney, raisiny aroma, heavy on the doppelbock characteristics, and notes of raspberry (but not dominant, as I found before). Very toasty body, lots of prune and raisin, with the somewhat tart raspberries really coming through most strongly in the finish and amazing aftertaste. Caramel and chocolate finishes off the raspberries at the end of the sip. There aren’t many beers that "warm up" to a delicious finish, but this is one of those. Very softly carbonated. I didn’t pick up all of this complexity the first time around, which may be due to a fresher palate (this time) or a different product.

Previous rating:Jim (flemdawg) was kind enough to bring a rare bottle of this Eisbock to Fort Wayne. Poured a ruddy orange/red-brown, with nary a bubble, achieving a very "syrupy" look in the glass. Aroma was very, very strong raspberry, with a touch of caramel and toast. Extremely tart and full-flavored, dominated by quality raspberry (of course) and some toast and caramel, although the raspberry clearly dominates the palate. A rich, rich beverage. 13% ABV? I wouldn’t have guessed it. I really enjoyed this beverage, but hesitate to rate it too highly, as the "beer" aspect of this Eisbock is really drowned out by the delicious raspberries (8-3-8-4-15).

Matt (thedm) provided this beverage to start another Fort Wayne tasting. Poured a cloudy peach color with plenty of "floaties" and a thin off-white head that left nice lacing. Yeasty, earthy aroma with some sweet honey and fruit notes. The flavor was surprisingly beer-like, very sweet but earthy and strongly bready/yeasty. Actually reminiscent of a golden Belgian ale. Candylike. The ethanol showed up in the aftertaste but was subdued (I can’t believe this is 13% ABV!). This was paired with Apis Jadwiga Mead, and these two meads represent the diversity within the style.

May 04 batch. Pours a bright godlen with some moderately darker copper tinges. Good white head. Aroma of bitter hops, not earthy or piney, but lightly floral and oily, just bitter and dry. Has some light malt in there as well. I thought the flavor was a lot less bitter than the hops predicted. Very dry and hoppy, with little malting. As it warms caramel malt emerges from within to slightly balance. Though it’s a big, hoppy APA, I thought the palisades were pretty tasty. New hop varietal from the Yakima valley. It’s cool that these guys keep on top of the latest hops strains.

2004 draught. Good thick brown appearance with some dark black hues. Big creamy off-white to tan head. Aroma is lightly salty, a touch of bitterness and some sweet malt as well. Flavor is moderately roasty, lots of fresh barley flavor and has a hint of hops on the finish, but the finish is quite unspectacular and thins out too much. Very watery mouthfeel, which dilutes the flavor. Medium body, low carbonation.
