2008-06-22, bottled 2005, 3 years old, 11.03% ABV, 7-5-8-4-16=40
Black color, with a generous creamy head; when pouring, it doesn’t seem very thick, there’s even a fizzy sound. It has a sweetish phenolic aroma at first, then some cookies and dark chocolate. It has an average body strength (i.e., less than other Imperial Stouts); it’s still sweetish, without being cloying, with a strong caramel flavor and just some dark chocolate; the bitterness is much attenuated, difficult to feel the 70 IBU; in the end there is a small alcohol perception. For being sweetish, with lower bitterness than the average, and with less roasted malt, it’s an easy Imperial Stout to drink.

Dark amber color. As expected, the usual caramel/liquorice/roasted malt in the aroma and flavor. Thanks Philippe (Bov) for sharing this bottle.

Copper coloured body with a light orange/red tint. Very thin off-white head. Aroma of peaches, alcohol, pears and malt. Full-bodied; Sweet initial flavour with caster sugar, peaches but then overshadowed by malt and an alcoholic burn. Aftertaste clean in comparison to the taste, but some alcoholic flavour remains. Overall, a good beer, but not pleasing for the style-nice to try however! I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased by my sister's fiance at Norm's in Vienna, Virginia on 25-December-2003.

Ruby tinted amber colour with a thinnish off-white head. Sweet aroma of peaches, apricots, caramel, raisins, brown and caster sugars all with a hoppy note and a malt presence. Full-bodied; Somewhat spicey initial taste mellows to a sweet flavour of fruits and some caster sugar. Aftertaste somewhat alcoholic and a bit harsh. Overall, a decent barleywine, needs some time to mature, but $4 for a 65 cL bottle is NOTHING! I bought this 65 cL bottle from Whole Foods in Vienna, Virginia and sampled it on 23-December-2003.

Honeyish malt and flowery hop aroma. Golden, low head with almost no carbonation. Honey malt flavors with a flowery hop middle. Dry bitterhop finish. ok body.

Cloudy amber color. Strong and absolutely peculiar aroma: oranges, figues, flowers (violets…), mango. Sweet in the front, fruity (oranges, mango, plums, muscadel…), getting bitter and bitter. No need to talk about malt/caramel and hops…. Mellower than other heavily hopped North American brews.

Coppery colour. Grapefruity aroma, with slight toast. Refreshing, crisp, lemony, grapefruity character. Very dry. The aroma is nice as the glass goes but the palate reveals itself fairly simple. In the rotation but not top of the charts, as IPAs go.

Dark burgundy colour. Robust aroma is hoppy, with chocolate and toast. I spend a lot of time sniffing this with my pen on the table, just because I wanted to enjoy it rather than analyze it. Toasty, nutty, complex porter with solid bitterness. Delicious.

Dark brown colour with a nice thin tan head. Aroma of hops, coffee and chocolate and roasted malt. Medium-bodied; Sweet tastes with nice coffee flavour. Aftertaste a bit bittered but not overly so. I had this bottle at the Winter Party at Oakes' place in Toronto, Canada on 05-December-2003. Many thanks go to CapFlu (Todd) for bringing this bottle up for us to try!

2003 Bottle. Yes, your winter ale does have a gorgeous mahogany hue, but it would be better if your winter ale didnt have a clear mahogany hue. What does Avery have against bottle conditioning??? Well anyways, it smelled pretty good, a mild cherry aroma, some drier nutty flavors and a touch of alcohol. Almost no head, but ends up with a ton of lacing. I really enjoyed the lack of spices, it was a nice change on the winter beer. Didnt know what to expect (which is a feeling I love having going into a beer). Opens up with a big flavorful cherry-caramel malt that is soft, and very balanced. Some dry nutty flavors make their way in, I wouldnt have guessed hazelnuts, maybe walnuts, but whatever, it adds a nice element of complexity. Finish ends with a dry roasty appeal and some alcohol. Aftertaste was a bit odd, that weird avery hops thing coming in, with some acidic/bitter hops. I could actually see the flavor melding together better after another year or so. Body is medium and has a soft/lightly syrupy, chewy texture with a good amount of carbonation. Dosent have the complexity of some of the best English Strongs and the flavor thins out a bit, but it's still above average.
