Description
Eylenbosch comes back to life in 2019, after almost 30 years of hibernation. Founded in 1886 by Emile Eylenbosch in Schepdaal, the Eylenbosch brewery grew into one of the most important producers of lambic and geuze in the last century, with an absolute high point at the 1958 world expo. Advantage of the industrial lager, and also Eylenbosch closed its doors and stopped production in the early 90s.
But luckily that wasn't the end of the story for this historic brewery. In 2018, Erik De Keersmaeker decided to focus on his passion after a number of other challenges. As the fifth generation of a brewery family from Kobbegem, De Keersmaeker brings the Eylenbosch brewery and its iconic beer back to life. He does this together with the young brewer Klaas Vanderpoorten and study friend Jeroen Lettens. The new Eylenbosch Brewery is dedicated to tradition and authenticity, and will brew its lambic using the traditional method and recipes.

0.375 l bottle from 'Het Huis van de Geuze', bottled in February 2021. Hazy, ruby with a thin, frothy, slowly diminishing, pinkish white head. Sweetish, slightly sourish, rather fruity and a little funky aroma of sour cherry, elderberry, red grapes and some oak. Slightly sweet, moderately sour, quite fruity and a bit funky taste of sour cherry, elderberry, some oak and hints of vinegar, followed by a short, gently tart, moderately woody-dry finish. Medium body, slightly astringent and moderately effervescent mouthfeel, soft carbonation. Reasonable Kriek, but quite simple. Still quite pleasant and refreshing.

Bottle, 5.5% as Hoppy Saison. Fruity and lagery aroma with a whiff of lemon. Hazy golden colour. Very big stable fluffy rocky white head. The flavour is yeast with a bit of lemony hop. The aftertaste is malty with a little lemon, but fades away very quickly.

Clear dark yellow colour with thin head. Carbonation is quite light. The wooden barrels come through really strongly. Next to the light tannins there's even a touch of vanilla. It's got a pleasant slightly lemony citric tartness too. Nicely complex. Great dry finish.

Gushing to huge, very dense light-cream head over furiously carbonated hazy orange-golden beer. Herbal nose, garden weeds, and a sharp, spicy-peppery aroma. Wild hops-like, if intense, almost insectoid. Hard bitterness, vegetable/weeds. Not very sophisticated bittering hops. Despite the huge carbonation, seems pretty attenuated, almost thinning the brew - too much sugar added? Crude.

Poured as if roping, devoid of any head; deep cardinal red beer. Coffee (???), Sachertorte, cherry cream, full carpet and finish is fruity/cherry. Sour cherries, juice-like, not much lambic character. In combination with food, the cherry flavour gets suddenly more intense, but hardly any of the classic farmyard/horseblanket vectors. Light, acidthinning and (light) acidburn; undercarbonated. If I read the label right, it ought NOT to be called Oude Kriek following the registered European rules, as the weighted average of the lambics is too low. But it is quite allright tastewise. Thanks to Stef!
