17 September 2022. At Tapster Wicker, Chicago. Shared with the lovely Anke!
Hazy black, stable, frothy, beige head. Aroma of toast, cashew, tobacco, earth, mushroom. Taste has sweetish toast, ‘pure’ roasted malt and cashew with an earthy-umami accent. Earthy, herbal hoppy finish, gentle tobacco note. Medium body, slick-watery texture, soft carbonation. Not bad but underwhelming.

On tap at Parson’s. Pours a clear gold with a white head that dissipates to the edges and laces slightly. Aroma combines lemongrass and hay with a good amount of straw backing. Flavor has lots of straw with light hay and a hint of lemongrass underlying.

Draft at Goldfinger. Slightly amber color in glass. Lacey foam around the edges, thin layer remains after a minute. Hop nose is fruity with a side of German bitterness. Even a touch of melon. Taste opens with a slightly thick mouthfeel, like a Vienna lager. Sharply butter hops profile my tongue, followed by cantaloupe. 4.9% Slight note of lemony starts to wander in. But at the same time the hop bitterness becomes more pronounced. Have remains clinging to the sides, which I don't normally see from a Goldfinger beer.

16 oz. can from Orange & Brew in March. Big foamy pour with a clear golden beer color. Smell is maybe deceptive: just like any plain light lager. Definite pills taste: a bit floral and pepper from the hops, which start to build on my palate even after the first sip. Kind of keeps to a basic beer taste, too. Although this can might be a little old, as I get a touch of oxidation. But, hmm… gets more agreeable as I go along, and drinks very quickly: that basic beer taste makes it easy to forget there's a bit more alcohol here. Turns out to be a decent strong beer disguised as an unassuming light beer.

Can from Livonia Liquor. Pours a clearish orange gold with two fingers of soapy white head that linger. Fruity esters with light spicy noble hop aromas as it warms. Palate is similar, effortless smooth on the way down. Balanced finish that leans a bit fruity. Nice textbook kolsch.
