Brouwerij Serafijn

Client Brewer in Heist-op-den-Berg, Antwerp, Belgium 🇧🇪
Associated Venue: Huisbrouwerij Achilles - Out of business

Established in 1999

Description
The microbrewery is founded by Achilles Van de Moer on the passion for special beers. After 7 years of trials with different beers, the decision to start a microbrewery in Itegem was made in 1999. The brand name of beers is “Serafijn”. All beers are high fermentation brews, with second fermentation in the bottle. Most of the beers are contract brewed, but some of them are also brewed at their own location.

In 2015 Achilles became part of Caupona bvba (of the Prik & Tik stores in Heist-op-den-Berg and Herselt). The brewery is now called ''Brouwerij Serafijn.'' That is the new company in Heist that houses the Serafijn beers. The former microbrewery in Itegem has been dismantled.

The beer is now brewed at the Pirlot brewery in Zandhoven.

Sampled from tap @ OBM 2013. Clear golden color, medium sized white head that lasts for a decent time. Smell and taste malts, a touch of sweetness, some bitterness in the finish. Nicely balanced, perfect carbonation, medium to full body. Very nice tripel.

33cl bottle: BBD of 23 Aug 2013, poured slowly into an ’Augustijn’ chalice on 13 Jun 2013. Good golden body, clean and clear: full and deep foam covering on top. Took a while before the head turned into a thinner blanket and then a wisp and collar. More hops in the aroma than most Belgian beers, peachy and fairly floral in nature. The taste was also hop fronted, with a sweet fruit following close behind. Slight yeast feel to the flavours with the alcohol also being noticeable in the mouth. OK, if a little sweet for such a light beer (in ABV and colour).

Aroma has some orange citrus and some yeast. Flavour has plenty of pale malt and again quite yeasty and lightly peppery.

Copper colour. Aroma has a pleasant sweetness. Flavour has the sweetness too leaving a finish a bit like bubblegum. This mixed with a metallic edge is not great.

It’s not really a Christmas Tasting in Odense. Golden with a disappearing white head. Aroma of grainy malt with fruity and grassy notes and a dusty hint. Sweet yeasty and dusty flavour with fruit and spice, especially a touch of pepper in the finish. Notable alcohol.
