Description
Hugel is the brewing company name of Koen Hugelier. After training in pharmaceutical and biological techniques and medical laboratory technology, Koen Hugelier worked for almost ten years at Ghent University on various scientific studies. In 2009 he became a certified zythologist and in this way got hold of the brewing bug. Because Hugelier could use a lot of knowledge from his training, it was quite easy to delve into the secrets of brewing. After some hobby brewing, Koen Hugelier was ready in 2010 to brew one of his beers in a 'big' brewery.

Brouwfirma Hugel brouwt biologische, artisanale bieren in brouwerij 'The Brew Society' in Heule.

Taste: pretty bitter, sweet and sugary, lots of citrus, grapefruit, exotic fruits, yeasty. Aftertaste: bitter, sweet malts, sugary, dry hops, citrus, grapefruit, little soapy, tamarind (?).

33cl bottle @ de Bierboom in Brugge on 18th Oct 2012. Rudy doesn’t have many glasses and this was given to me with an unmarked chalice to drink it from: it worked! The beer pours almost jet black (it is dark in de Bierboom, even on a sunny day): anywhere else it is most likely dark brown with a ruby tinge. The head was full, deep and tan coloured. Dark chocolate malts rule here: the nose and taste just ooze chocolate, dark, bitter and yet an underlying sweetness abounds too. Interesting and heavy bodied, a night cap sort of beer, not a mid-afternoon mid-session beer like when I had it!

Bottle from Star Grocery in Berkeley, CA. Pours dark brown with a decent creamy tan head. Complex aroma: dark fruit; red berries; anise; yeast/spice. Treacle. Lots of stuff. Ginger? Med body. I’m for all the aromas plus a little ginger. I’m a fool for ginger. It’s tingly spicy. Now I’m imagining pumpkin pie spice. Well, t’is the season. It is not wholly dry, but dry enough. No trace of heat. Killer ale.

5/IV/2012 - 75cl bottle from De Hopduvel (Gent) @ Klaas' place - BB: XI/13 (2012-330)

Little cloudy red brown beer, small beige head, unstable, dissipates immediately, non adhesive. Aroma: overripe to rotten fruits, dried fruits, bit mouldy. MF: ok carbon, full body. Taste: very sweet sugary, some molasses, syrup, brown sugar, little mocha, liquorish and cinnamon. Aftertaste: very sweet sugary, rotten fruits, some mocha, dry ending, spices, star anise. This is pretty bad. I don't know what they are doing at Gulden Spoor, but if they let someone else brew there, they better leave it to the guys from Verzetbrouwerij. Oh yeah, completely ridiculously overpriced. I'm not spending any more money on these guys from Hugel.
