Description
Established in 1990, Otter Brewery began brewing its beer from a farmhouse location in the heart of Devon’s Blackdown Hills. Since then, the whole family has been involved in developing our award-winning range of beers and our widely recognised Otter brand.
With over five generations of brewers in the family, the building of Otter Brewery was, and still is, without a doubt, a labour of love. We believe this is why our beer tastes so great and why more and more people are drinking it. Our product offering is constantly evolving to suit the needs of both traditional and modern ‘craft’ drinkers. A range that provides something for everyone.
By 2003, we realised that we were rapidly outgrowing our original production facilities and we took the plunge to invest in a fantastic new, state of the art, brewery and cellar – both of which are award-winning in their own right. The business still occupies the same rural site and now the old brewery barns are used to feed the troops rather than brew beer. In 2007 we built the underground cellar which was certainly the first of its scale in Devon.
Most importantly, all our growth has been organic and we remain proud to be family run.

You gotta love the symmetry of this beer’s name - anyway, this is a pretty interesting ale - looks like your standard british IPA or bitter, but it’s anything but - according to the label, this is also brewed with wheat, oats, rye, and spelt, which explains to interesting eccentricities - the oats are quite apparent in the aroma, along with some earth marris otter character, and a bit of nuttiness - grassy american hops hit the tongue first, but after that the british ale yeast and malts take over, and serve as a base for the added ingredients - rye is most noticeable, and the oats add their presence a bit - some caramel sweetness and nutty character arrive late - interesting herbal, almost tea-like notes in places - a unique and tasty brew - now I need to try some of their other offerings.

Cask-conditioned at the Rising Sun, Frampton Cotterell, S Gloucs 3/5/08. This was called "St George’s Ale" but, according to the brewery’s website, all its seasonal ales are rebadges of the same base beer. Deep reddish-brown in colour with next to no head and an aroma of toffee and red fruit. The flavour was sweet too, with plenty of malt and some earthy hops in the finish. Good.

500ml bottle - Pours hazy light brown with almost no head and very little carbonation. It has a mild aroma of caramel malt. The flavor is led by toasty toffee malt and has some mild hops. It has a medium body and a light, bitter finish. This beer is pretty average. I really should stop paying the high prices for the many mediocre to average English bitters that seem to be so common now.

16.9 oz bottle from Whole Foods Charlottesville. Pours a pretty standard amber IPA amber. Small white head with little retention and little lacing. Aroma it of a nice bitter hoppiness, but it’s also a bit watery and faint. Is there lemon in this? Bitter beginning ends with the same sensation as sucking on a lemonhead. This could use some more hops, but the maltiness is nice.

500ml bottle. Golden body under a filmy head. Mild floral hops to the nose. Brush of sweet malts and hops in flavour. Smooth bitter finish, but not enough to counter the sweetness. Light mouthfeel (24.02.2008).

Cask-conditioned at the Bag O’Nails, Bristol 4/2/08. Pale gold with a slight white head. Aroma of hay and sweet malt. Flavour was slightly sweet with a short, bitter finish. Ok but not particularly memorable.
