Cask at the 10th Colchester Winter Beer Festival. Pours clear pale gold with a bubbly white head. Aroma is floral, citrus, light caramel. Medium to heavy sweetness and light but sharp bitterness. Light body and slight oily texture, average carbonation. Finish is dry and lightly fruity.

Clear medium amber colour, good frothy off-white head, half-way lasting, good lacing. Aroma toasted malts, caramel, spices, orange peel, pine. Taste medium sweet and bitter, malty, toffee, fruity, bit ginger. Sweetbitter aftertaste, light spices, dry bitter finish, bit husky. Medium body, watery to oily texture, soft carbonation, overall a quite nice smooth light spiced bitter.

500ml bottle. Clear, reddish brown colour with small, frothy, half-way lasting, minimally lacing, off-white head. Spicy, slightly perfumed and floral aroma, hints of coriander, spruce needles, petals, ginger, a touch of cinnamon and orange zest. Taste is minimally sweet caramel malty with a nuttily touch, cautious hints of cinnamon and nutmeg, a dry, close to soapy touch of ginger, floral overtones; super soft, smooth palate. Mild, not overspiced, unspectacular.

Bottle shared in London - big thanks to fonefan. Pours brown like cola with a creamy, small khaki head. The nose has burnt toast, berries, suggestions of cocoa. Light sweet flavour with leathery berries, faint earthy notes, dusty cocoa. Light bodied with massaging carbonation. Dry finish, restrained, with more dried and leathery berries, hints of cocoa. Not bad.

Bottle shared up in Kensal Rise. Pours clear, rich brown with a frothy, khaki head. Moderate roast in the nose, a little dry cocoa, burnt grains, some earth. Light sweet flavour with some lightly tangy dark malts, some raisin, a little toffee, tangy berries. Light bodied with fine carbonation. Fairly bland in the finish, some toasty grains, more verifies, earth. Quite basic.

Bottle shared with the crew at C&R House. Pours brown with a creamy tan head: the nose holds burnt toast, a little licorice, earth, berries. Light sweet flavour with more berries, plum, toasted leaves, a little charcoal. Light bodied with velvety texture. Nicely balanced finish with a bit more ashy roast, raisin and plum, dry cocoa. Enjoyable British fare.

Handpull cask at the Earl of Beaconsfield, Cambridge. Amber/light brown. Almost clear. A glorious slightly loose white head on top. Green wood, grass, lemon and a touch of cinnamon. Light bitterness pervades the taste from the Styrian Goldings hop. The long finish is earthy yet delicate. Astringent notes with hints of unripe strawberry in the aftertaste. Very well put together. This is why I like cask ale.
