Description
Põhjala Brewery is the brainchild of three friends and beer aficionados who, like many a future craft brewer, got tired of the tasteless watery lagers that the faceless megacorporations have saturated the beer market with.
We brew small batches of hand crafted ales, using the best malts, loads of mostly New World hops and a relentless passion for good beer. When creating our beers, we are inspired by Nordic nature, Estonian new cuisine and the work of our fellow microbrewers in the U.S., UK and Scandinavia who, in our opinion, are leading the craft beer revolution.
In hops we trust!

On tap at Speakeasy, Tallinn. Looks like used motor oil, not much head to speak of. Aroma is dominated by sherry and raisins with nice roasty notes, dark chocolate, liqueur and hints of alcohol. Sweet, complex and very flavourful with lovely notes of roasted malt and sherry. Wow! This is really delicious, and surprisingly smooth and balanced. I liked the original very much but this is just top notch! Excellent and delicious!

On tap at Speakeasy, Tallinn. Slightly hazy deep amber to copper coloured with an off-white head. Aroma of freshly brewed coffee, caramel, malt, sweet fruits and hints of spices. Sweet, flavourful and surprisingly smooth somehow. Looks nice and doesn’t disappoint with the taste either. Full bodied with carbonation slightly on the soft side. Finishes lightly bitter. Surprisingly delicious and enjoyable.

33cl bottle from Drink Shop, Tallinn. Pours slightly hazy deep amber with a large, off-white head. Rather fruity and fairly malty aroma with notes of seaweed, bananas, spices, caramel and hints of alcohol. Fairly sweet with interesting flavours and a mild acidity. Tasty and quite unusual weizenbock. Alcohol is fairly noticeable, but otherwise it’s quite well balanced. Nice one.

Tap at speakeasy, Tallinn. Pours ruby with beige head. The head stays for some time. Aroma is sweet, burnt sugar, berries, caramel. Flavor follows the nose. Overall: ok. 6:4:6:3:13=3.2 0,33L bottle. Pours dark ruby with beige head. The head stays. Aroma is mild metallic, berries, cranberries, sourness. Flavor is sweet, caramel, fruits, spicy notes, cranberries, some red wine notes, Finish is dry bitter with some alcohol. Overall: ok. Some ranting following... I suspect Magnum is ruining it for me again. Why oh why do Põhjala put it in every f’king brew?! Just checked, they seem to have 5 brews without it and all the brews without Magnum (except Põhja Konn) are among my top five of Põhjala.

Keg at BD Helsinki. It pours deep ruby with a decent beige head. The nose is rich, sweet, jammy berry, fruit cake, earth, raisin, eccles cake, warming alcohol, ginger snaps and black tea. The taste is smooth, oily, bitter-sweet, varnish, resinous, piney, dried fruits, fruit cake, toffee, umami, glacier cherry, alcohol boost, toasty brown sugar, gingersnaps and general warmth with a slick finish. Medium-full body, fine carbonation and oily mouth-feel. Rich and decadent, yet remains pretty drinkable. Good stuff.

0,33L bottle, batch 079. Pours amber with beige head. The head stays for a moment. Aroma is sweet, sour, fruits, a touch of popcorn. Flavor is some sourness, bitterness, fruits, citrus, spices, oranges, and some popcorn. Palate is rather watery. Overall: drinkable. Bottle was shaken up, but this shouldn’t matter for a simple beer like this.
