Description
Põhjala Brewery is the brainchild of three friends and beer aficionados who, like many a future craft brewer, got tired of the tasteless watery lagers that the faceless megacorporations have saturated the beer market with.
We brew small batches of hand crafted ales, using the best malts, loads of mostly New World hops and a relentless passion for good beer. When creating our beers, we are inspired by Nordic nature, Estonian new cuisine and the work of our fellow microbrewers in the U.S., UK and Scandinavia who, in our opinion, are leading the craft beer revolution.
In hops we trust!

A black beer, a head is quite small and light brown. Aroma has roastiness, mable syrup, marshmellows, feels sweet, lets see. Taste has roastiness, liquorice, mashmellows, light smoke, also sweetness. Full bodied. If there would be less sweetness...

Black with a tan head. Roasted malts, deep caramel, dark chocolate, vanilla, dark fruits, coffee grounds, cola, a fleeting bright hop note, earthy and rounded out with bitter burnt malt. Full bodied. Finish has plenty of roasted and burnt malts with a present sweet toffee that makes a short appearance. Quite a big Baltic.

33cl bottle bought at the brewery. Pours close to pitch black with a modest, beige head. Roasty and vinous with notes of dried fruits, wood, vanilla, dark chocolate and hints of rye bread and alcohol. Sweet, smooth and warming with complex flavours. Desserty and enjoyable.

Bottle. Nice pour with a frothy tan head. Aroma is chocolate, cherries, rye whisky, prune and an abundance of dark malts. Full bodied with quite a thick mouthfeel. Flavour is big and boozy, malty with a medium sweetness. I don't really get the coconut sugar, but the vanilla is here more than in the aroma, along with lots of fruity notes, for me especially cherry, prune, raisin. The whisky lingers, and it gives a nice warmth. I'm rather partial towards pöhjala's imperial stouts, and anything they do that involves rye is especially up my alley, so this hits all the spots for me.

330 ml bottle. Pours a dark brown with moderate foamy head. Aromas of smoke, cherrywood, red berries and roasted malts. Flavors follow same with nice light body that enhances the fruit. Easy to drink. Very good.

44cl can bought aat the shop at Põhjala Brewery & Tap Room, Tallinn. Pours hazy yellow with a decent, white head. Fruity aroma with notes of spruce, geen grapes and citrus. Moderate sweet with medium flavour intensity and ditto bitterness. Rather tasty and quite enjoyable. Could easily have this again.
