Description
Põhjala Brewery is the brainchild of three friends and beer aficionados who, like many a future craft brewer, got tired of the tasteless watery lagers that the faceless megacorporations have saturated the beer market with.

We brew small batches of hand crafted ales, using the best malts, loads of mostly New World hops and a relentless passion for good beer. When creating our beers, we are inspired by Nordic nature, Estonian new cuisine and the work of our fellow microbrewers in the U.S., UK and Scandinavia who, in our opinion, are leading the craft beer revolution.

In hops we trust!

Almost black. Aroma is heavy chocolate cream vanilla cocoa and a hint of berries. Taste is raspberry but not overly sour dense cocoa with lots of chocolate sweetness and heavy boozy bitterness with a hint of raisin. Pretty dense and heavy with little carbonation. Long cocoa finish. Great and complex.

Bottle picked up from Beyond Beer webshop Hamburg and consumed at home Friday 15th May 2026, we had a great Keema Pau with Samosas and Rice. Listening to 6Music. Pours black with a light tan head. The nose is dark bitter chocolate but it's also got hints of vanilla. In the mouth more of the sane, this amburana wood really does put a twist on things. There's a little bit of spice, some tonka, a little chocolate covered coconut, re: the tonka, I don't see that in the description. It's a smooth, rich, lovely beer chocolate, coconut again nice. Score: 7.9

Gusher alert! Pours unclear darker blonde. No stable head. Scent is citrussy, malty, midlly recognizable NA. Taste is pretty generic craft NA, mild bitterness, sweet, bit citrussy. Sticky finish. Somehow, even though it's a gusher, carbo feels low. Meh.

330ml bottle. A tiny fawn- coloured head over a black body, rings of lace down the glass. Roasted earthy chocolate aromas with vanilla hints. Sweet taste of mid dry vanilla chocolate, hints of rye malts and caramel. Lightly smoked ending with long lived chocolate moments. Well bodied. Nice sipper that gets a little too sweet in the long run. (Tromsø, 14.05.2026).

330ml bottle. Jet black colour with small to average, dense, creamy, slowly diminishing, minimally lacing, tan head. Sweet-ish, caramel malty and chocolately, mildly roasty, dark malty as well as minimally herbal-spicy and nutty aroma, notes of toffee, caramel, dark caramel, some coffee, whiffs of liquorice; weak nutty-spicy overtones remind of tonka beans but aren't comparable concerning intensity, remain rather cautious (the pandan leaves are responsible here, I guess). Taste is roasty and chocolately, dark malty, caramel malty and mildly bitter hoppy, mild "exotic" spiciness, notes of toffee, some caramel, dark caramel, dark chocolate, a touch of coffee, subtle residual sweetness, a nutty and herbal touch probably due to the pandan leaves.
Oily to viscous texture, smooth and soft, minimally greasy palate, fine, dense, soft, still efficacious, mildly prickly carbonation.
Very homogeneous, some subtleties but not overly compex - solid, not outstanding.
