Description
Põhjala Brewery is the brainchild of three friends and beer aficionados who, like many a future craft brewer, got tired of the tasteless watery lagers that the faceless megacorporations have saturated the beer market with.

We brew small batches of hand crafted ales, using the best malts, loads of mostly New World hops and a relentless passion for good beer. When creating our beers, we are inspired by Nordic nature, Estonian new cuisine and the work of our fellow microbrewers in the U.S., UK and Scandinavia who, in our opinion, are leading the craft beer revolution.

In hops we trust!

Bottle picked up from Mr Hop webshop, Vernray Netherlands. Consumed at Frank, Studentenstadt, München Sunday 7th December 2025 after a wonderful day out with Jude and Baz. Pours black without a head, or if there was a head it didn't last long. Thickness in the mouth, taste is erring towards a stout, yeah I get the strong ale but a first I wasn't thinking along those lines, I guess the barrel ageing threw me as well. Raisins steeped in alcohol springs to mind, alongside quite a chocolate hit, also a little boozy. Very good. Score 7.4

Bottle. A bit low on the carbonation. Full-bodied, smooth, lightly warming. Soy sauce, roasted malts, dark chocolate, hints of licorice and a light earthy touch. A bit demanding this one, and a bit low on carbonation, but sure nice. 747414. 251207

Med-full bod, med-light carbo. I dont have a clue what panoa even is. But the overall beer is a very nice B porter. Alc very deceptively hidden, light warmth only. Med sweet and bitter. Lots of chocolate, less toffee, less biscuity, hint of coffee. Great.

Black colour, mediumsized beigeish brown head. Aroma is toffee, some toasted and mild cherry tones with some smoked wood and mild chocolaty tones. Flavour is chocolaty, some mild toasted tones with a bit wooden and a bit mocha as well as smoked wooden tones to it. Smooth and nice. Mild spiciness. Drank at room temperature, and nothing to regret, worked really well.

Sweetish, roasty and earthy with some apples, cognac oakiness, toffee, syrup, hints of licorice, chocolate and bitterness. A bit unbalanced, quite roasty for a barley wine.

Golden coloured, slightly on the pale side, quite hazy with a bit of murkiness. Gets just a layer of head, shows quite good retention and a bit of lacing though. Average intensity in the aroma: fresh and slightly juicy hoppiness, dominated by tropical notes (litchee most clearly noticeable, grapefruit and pineapple also certainly in the mix), a hint of resinous feel in the background, perhaps a hint of hoppy prickliness. Malty notes hardly noticeable, perhaps a soft cerealish hint. Taste notes confirm a quite neutral malty base that stays in the background, with a bit of soaked flakes like feel; nicely fresh, slightly juicy hoppiness with tropical fruit notes as per aroma and just a hint of resinous feel plus a hint of hops prickliness/spiciness. Sweetness and bitterness are both quite low for the style and the beer feels quite neutral in the overall balance (i mean neutral in a pleasant way, makes for a very easygoing taste). Taste definition is ok. Clean and quite neutral aftertaste, maybe just a bit of juicy fruitiness reminescence. Light to medium body, average, very thin bubbled (especially per style) carbonation; pleasantly smooth with a hint of softness, and just a nice touch of liveliness from carbonation. Overall: a well made hazy ipa, sort of delicate but still nicely refreshing.
