Description
Põhjala Brewery is the brainchild of three friends and beer aficionados who, like many a future craft brewer, got tired of the tasteless watery lagers that the faceless megacorporations have saturated the beer market with.
We brew small batches of hand crafted ales, using the best malts, loads of mostly New World hops and a relentless passion for good beer. When creating our beers, we are inspired by Nordic nature, Estonian new cuisine and the work of our fellow microbrewers in the U.S., UK and Scandinavia who, in our opinion, are leading the craft beer revolution.
In hops we trust!

(Draft at Akkurat, Stockholm, 30 Apr 2026) Black colour with creamy, beige head. Malty, fruity, roasty nose with notes of chocolate, raspberries, coffee and liquorice. Malty, roasted taste with chocolate, raspberries, coffee, liquorice and a gentle roasty bitterness. Mild berry acidity coming through. A bit boozy, but rich and tasty. Very nice.

Can picked up from Beyond Beer webshop Hamburg and consumed at home Sunday 24th May 2026 after a great weekend away in Wien. Still listening to Boards of Canada - Geogaddi, we had Nidi di Tagliatelle al forno (baked pasta nests) for tea we've done an Ndjua version. Pours orange with a small/mid sized white head. Soft carbonation, yeah it is pretty decent. Hazy amber with a small off white head. Sweet maltiness, hoppy and bitter but a little restrained regarding the latter two, some caramel and a little peachiness. Nice mouthfeel, soft carbonation, good but was hoping for a bit more. Score:7.4

Bottle picked up from Beyond Beer webshop Hamburg and consumed at Zoku Aparthotel. Had this Saturday 23rd May 2026 after a great day in Wien. Pours dark brown/almost black with a thin rim of beige. Light smokiness but theres a little bit of nuttiness and chocolate but definitely a nice smokey edge. Boozy but not too boozy, warming and surprisingly easy drinking despite the abv. This is a v.good imperial stout from Pohjala. Score: 8.0

Bottle picked up from Beyond Beer webshop Hamburg and consumed at apartment in Passau Wednesday 21st May 2026 watching Netflix after a humongous Pizza 🍕 at L'Osteria. Pours shark eye pitch black with a mid sized tan head. The aroma is a little roasty but also wordiness, chocolate and a little fudge, Loz picks up smokiness more than I can. Warming in the mouth, a little vanilla, chocolate again, nice but ultimately a bit too sweet. Score: 7.3

Sample, thanks fonefan! Black, small head. Żubrówka-like almondy, cinnamony grainy licorice aroma. Quite sweet with near full body and rounded mouthfeel. Heavily roasted granola, lots of peppery, spicy Żubrówka. Toffee, coffee and licorice. Warming, mid bitter finish. Interesting and well made.
