Description
Põhjala Brewery is the brainchild of three friends and beer aficionados who, like many a future craft brewer, got tired of the tasteless watery lagers that the faceless megacorporations have saturated the beer market with.
We brew small batches of hand crafted ales, using the best malts, loads of mostly New World hops and a relentless passion for good beer. When creating our beers, we are inspired by Nordic nature, Estonian new cuisine and the work of our fellow microbrewers in the U.S., UK and Scandinavia who, in our opinion, are leading the craft beer revolution.
In hops we trust!

0.33 l bottle from 'Craftbeers', bottled in October 2025. Black with a thin, frothy, quickly diminishing, light brown head. Intensely sweetish-malty, gently fruity and slightly boozy aroma of molasses, raisins, prunes, whisky and light vanilla. Heavily sweet, malty, moderately bitter, quite fruity, slightly boozy and minimally roasty taste of molasses, raisins, prunes, whisky, vanilla and light chocolate, followed by a long, moderately bitter, gently boozy finish. Almost full-bodied, gently effervescent mouthfeel, soft carbonation. Very rich and saturating brew, nicely fruity, not too boozy. Unfortunately a little thin, but apart from that a lovely beer.

Uit een flesje. Bijna zwart bier, schuim lichtbruin, helaas niet heel vol. Rook in het aroma, ook wat caramel. Zachte rokerige volle smaak, mokka. Prima.

Reviewed from notes.
Bottle to snifter.
Appearance: straight black in the pour and black in the glass, less than a finger's worth of off white foamy head which dissipated nicely to leave some light lace
Aroma: milk chocolate, dark malts, subtle roasted coffee notes
Flavor: leads with the milk chocolate sweetness and seems to mostly stay that way; finishes milk chocolatey sweet
Texture: medium bodied, somewhere between sessionable and being a sipper; pretty smooth all around
Overall: a very dessert-like porter I'd be willing to come back to.

Bottle to snifter.
Appearance: dark brown close to black in the pour with a small khaki foamy head which slid off nicely but once it did barely any lace formed
Aroma: big sweet maple syrupy whiffs, milk chocolate, dark chocolate, sweet wafers, some sweet wood
Flavor: blends the prior noted aromas together to a fine sweet character; finishes maple-y and chocolatey
Texture: medium bodied, this one's a sipper, very smooth and semi-slick along the tongue, not cloying
Overall: a very well done impy stout I would very much love to have again.

33cl bottle from Sip, Tallinn. Pours very dark mahogany coloured with a fairly modest, tanned head. Roasty aroma with dark chocolate, dark fruits, ripe raspberries, wood and hints of alcohol and caramel. Sweet, smoot and flavourful with pleasant slightly acidic notes. Could easily have this one again.

On tap at Põhja Konn, Tallinn. Pours close to completely clear golden with a fairly modest, white head. Smells a bit like coconut, yes, somewhat fruity as well. Not really my cup of tea, somehow the mix and the flavours doesn't really work for me. Weird carbonation, sour and strange flavour mix. Not unpleasant, but not really refreshing either.
