De Dolle Brouwers

Microbrewery in Diksmuide, West Flanders, Belgium 🇧🇪
Associated Venue: De Dolle Brouwers

Established in 1980

Contact
Roeselarestraat 12B, Diksmuide, 8600, Belgium
Description
The founder of the brewery was a doctor in medicine, Louis Nevejan.

We have recently found papers in the archives stating that the first building dates from 1835 AD. Once it was both a brewery and distillery. The founder died in 1882 and the brewery was sold to Alouis Costenoble. The family brewed for three generations until 1980 when the brewery stopped.

Beer brands included COQ PILS OUD BRUIN & COSMOS. In Esen there were six breweries (all small and part-time) and two distilleries. The actual brewer is doing historical research on West-Flanders breweries since 1900 AD, and has got the 'GOLDEN HAMMER' Trophy, a two yearly award for historic research on breweries. This was attributed by vzw 't Hamerken in Bruges on March 27, 2000 AD

Sampled draught at Akkurat, Stockholm.
Hazy, reddish brown. Woody nose. Dry and hoppy solidly malty. Peppery, rounded mouthfeel and some vinou qualities. Salty bitterish finish.
Old rating, bottled. Deep ruby and lively with rich, firm head. Vinuous nose. Sweet and lean with rich toffee flavour and some lactic acidity. The finish has notes of cherries and a short sting of bitter hops. Complex and really tasty. (9/5/8/4/16)

Very cloudy beige color, big creamy, frothy head. Spicy aroma, not as spicy and fruity as the usual Dolle brew. Bit earthy taste, malty, yeasty, spicy. Not the best Dolle brew, and that's an understatement...

Bottled, 2000 version.
Pours thick and deep amber with no head. The aroma is heavenly and arousing. It strikes like a fina muscat wine, there's notes of wood and cherry and so much else I couldn't keep track on. As it warms it becomes more port like and developed peppery notes. There is loads of malt to balance it, and the body is firm and dense and with tremendous depth. It is sweet, sure, but never strikes me as syrupy or sticky just perfectly balanced. The finish is velvetty and oaky. This is as close to perfection as it goes, and this is arguably the best beer I've ever sampled.

2001 version, sampled draught at Akkurat, Stockholm, Sweden in December 2002.
Reddish amber. Candied apple aroma. Sweet, fruity, malty and estery. Syrupy mouthfeel and full body. Lingering caramel and honey finsish with just a note of hop nitterness. A complex candy beer to savour.

Orange color, with a lot of small yeast particles floating through. Thick lacing. Fruity aroma, also malty and yeasty alltogether. Really a taste-sensation. I like triples to be spicy actually, as the delirium tremens, guillotine and even the Hertog Jan triple. But this one, is really special. Very complex taste, so complex you do not notice the 10 % ABV. Long lingering palate, delicious palate! Excellent triple!

Rerate: I have to recall on my original rate of 3.0. This years batch is not as alcoholic as last years. That definitely improves my drinking pleasure. The typical Dolle taste, with its subtle sour refreshing note, becomes more obvious, and that is definitely something i like! Original rate: Floating yeast particles everywhere. Malty aroma. Alcoholic taste and palate, as in a lot of Christmas brews. But this one could not enjoy me much.

Rerate #2: Delicious beer. Very strong, high carbonation, so definitely not a session ale. Notes of a flemish sour ale, combined with a belgian strong ale. Beautiful stuff! Rerate: Dark color. Malty aroma, with notes of sharp licorice sourness. Roasted malts, sweet, fruity spicy also. Bitter palate, with alcohol present. Original rate: Delicious aroma, of spices and malts combined. Bit like Abbaye des Rocs, but i only had that once. Bit sourness adds to the taste. Fruity elements also. Overall very good beer.
