De Dolle Brouwers
Microbrewery
in Diksmuide,
West Flanders,
Belgium 🇧🇪
Associated Venue: De Dolle Brouwers
Established in 1980
We have recently found papers in the archives stating that the first building dates from 1835 AD. Once it was both a brewery and distillery. The founder died in 1882 and the brewery was sold to Alouis Costenoble. The family brewed for three generations until 1980 when the brewery stopped.
Beer brands included COQ PILS OUD BRUIN & COSMOS. In Esen there were six breweries (all small and part-time) and two distilleries. The actual brewer is doing historical research on West-Flanders breweries since 1900 AD, and has got the 'GOLDEN HAMMER' Trophy, a two yearly award for historic research on breweries. This was attributed by vzw 't Hamerken in Bruges on March 27, 2000 AD

(!Vertical tasting between A(marks as above): bottling date 6/2003; B [marks in text]: bottling date 7/1994) Colour: A absurdly huge white, dense head, going down lacey, straw-yellow coloured beer, slight (cold?)haze; B fully clear, yellow to pale amber beer, big bubbles going to good white head [4] Nose: A honey-ish, immediately followed by beautiful fresh hops from the sack; B alcoholic, nutty and mushroom/mouldy nose [7] Taste: A surprising chalk flavour – normally a typical nose-only feature. Then hoparoma but much more restrained than in the nose. Finish is citruslike, like lemon without the acidity. End bitterness is, again, chalk-like if that makes any sense; B oxidized, but resulting in a perfect balance of sweetness (cookie/biscuit-like), acidity (lactic and fruity) and a reference to hoppy bitterness. Very fruity flavours: apricot, papaya, citrus and loads of honey [9] “Palate”: full-bodied, heavy without being syrupy. Fresh hops again in the aftertaste; B the oxidation notwithstanding, thanks to the acidity, this is much more refreshing – paradoxically for an aged fresh-hops beer [4] Overall: These results are very strange. The acidity is cruelly lacking in the young beer, which has a much more satisfying hopsaroma. The “Arafat” (Arabier on draught for those illiterate in Dutch and Palestinian) is probably better both in taste and palate. Arabier used to be the only DDB beer I preferred young. I’m afraid Arabier has also suffered under the yeast-embargo B:[17]

Best before: Dec 2003. Caramelized sugar, candy, citric acidity, some decomposing leaves, quite complex, cant seem to find the right words for all the aromas. Dark amber, quite bubbly, head is a nice creamy layer. Strong, almost sticky caramel flavors which easily reach the back of the throat. Fruit on top of that. Dry mouthfeel, full and warming body.

Best before 2005. Raisins and peaches in the aroma. Brown, flakes of yeast big fluffy head. Raisins, sweet brown sugar and a slight citric aftertaste. Very warming - the perfect winter beer. This bottle was a little bit too sweet - aging will probably do a lot to this beer.

(Beer from DDB, mixed with 10% Luxemburg Riesling wine) Gushing to huge, irregular creamy head, collapsing. Flunky, totally opaque amber colour. Lactic, Brett-like nose (phenolic), but also fruity and flowery. Perfumed taste, rosewater, soft spices as galanga root, etc. Sweet, slightly sour taste and tart-ish finish. Well-bodied, slightly slick mouthfeel. In the aftertaste, it gets (hop)bitter. Nice; I was afraid after the first reports, but this is OK. Spicey, fruity, original. Yet it will be a one-off, they say.

The third De Dolle brew of the evening and one of the most original beers I've had the pleasure of sipping. Poured a burnt orange color with plenty of sediment and a creamy white head. Caramel, toast, and cheerios in the aroma- a hint of urine? Also some rubbing alcohol or Band-aid tones. Very interesting flavor- alcohol, caramel, honey, chocolate, oranges, some woodiness and a hint of banana. Lively carbonation.

The second De Dolle of the evening poured golden orange, full of yeast sediment, with a puffy, off-white head. Strong lemon scents in the aroma; also some must. Rather Saison- or lambic-like. Flavor was somewhat spicy, with muted earthy malts, sweet, with citrus flavors especially evident at the end of the sip. Strong carbonation. Nice.

Aftering being let down by the BBB (Boring Brown Belgian) Chimay Bleu, I was pleasantly surprised by this delicious beer. Oerbier is cloudy brown and poured with a thick, creamy off-white head and nice lacing. I immediately noted caramel, cherries, raisins, and red wine in the very sweet nose. Flavor was a rich medley of dark fruit, caramels and red wine, all of which formed a unique, very sweet beer. Lively mouthfeel due to strong carbonation. The sweetness does become a bit cloying by the end of the glass, however. Still an excellent, most interesting brew.

Bottled. Hazily orange. Livley, firm head. Grassy and very fruity. Sugary and rounded, notes of citrus and lightly sparkling mouthfeel. Good, but less pronounced than other De Dolles.

The best word to describe this beer would be, fruity - cloudy orange, pillowy white head - intense aroma of apples and pears - flavor steps up the intense fruits in the aroma - sweet citrus flavors (grapefruit with sugar on top) - apples and raisins - toastiness comes in late, with some cinnamon notes, wintery spices - toastiness lingers into the finish, with a dash of hops to cut the sweetness - this is a very original beer - top marks.

Pale amber-orange, slightly hazy; thick yellowish head. Citrussy, lemony nose, candi-sugar, bit yeasty. Taste is candi-sugar, slightly peppery, but overimpregnated by coloured malts. Retronasal some hops and caramelised sugar. Extremely dry mouthfeel - if James Bond would drink beer instead of Martini, 't would be this. Alcohol-burn, liqueurish, artichoke in the aftertaste. I'm not a fan of duvel-like contraptions, but this is so over the top that it becomes great.
