Description
In 2003, Tony Traen, took over Kapel van Viven from Willy De Lobel (the founder of Kapel van Viven) Since then, chapel of Viven has undergone several changes: a brand new look, an improved recipe for the Monastery of Viven and a new name. Chapel and Monastry of Viven were baptized Viven Blond and Viven Brown.

The idea to apply our Flemish brewing art to non-Flemish beers haunted Tony and together with Dirk Naudts (owner of the Proef brewery), he developed the recipes of the promising Viven Ale, Viven Porter, Viven Imperial IPA and Viven Master IPA. These exceptional beers, that would truly tempt any beer connoisseur, have been successfully launched onto the beer market in 2010, making them accessible to a wider audience of beer lovers.

For Tony and Krystle Traen, the driving forces behind the brewery, Viven has been a passion for over twenty years.

Krystle, one of the few female brewers in Belgium, is responsible for the taste of the different beers in the range. She composes the recipes and brews the first test batches in the kettles in Damme. When a new beer is tasted and approved by Krystle, the production moves to the Proefbrouwerij in Lochristi to be able to brew higher volumes. Tony is responsible for the administration, transport and sales. He started the Viven story, more than twenty years ago, in the little town of Vivenkapelle and turned it into an international brand.

Bottled 330ml. -from Ambasada Zagreb. Hazy yellow/orange coloured, medium sized white head, light yeasty citrusy nose. Yeasty, citrusy, light coriander, touch of spices and sweetish finish. Surprisingly low carbonation.

A light haze on this deep amber beer, small pale tan head. Palate is light and semi dry and has a good fine carbonation. Thin malts bring a little caramel and cream. The JD barrelling is obvious and delivers pleasingly fruity bourbon. However there is also something a bit wonky on the light dry finish that for me, really mars this Barleywine. Something a bit petrol and a bit something else alcohol gone wrong.

opalescent pale yellow colour, moderate sized dense off-white head; aroma of lemony, marmalade, some slight tropical fruity and sweaty notes; taste has great amount of hoppy bitterness, some citrusy, minimal tropical fruity and sweet corny notes; not bad considering that it is a N.A. beer

Light haze on this deep amber beer, small pale tan head. Palate is light and semi dry, good fine minerally carbonation. Light malts, decent cream and caramel and a touch of toffee. Crisp pine. Crisp ripe fruits on the back end, tastes pretty bourbon barrelled. Crisp finish. Nice. Vivien always strike me a brewery that produces clean beers and this Barleywine is no exception. Tastes BBA though...

A 33 cl bottle of stout apparently enhanced by chocolate and sent along by one of my Belgian retailers. Time for a try. Using my ABGB snifter to catch the pour, I see a dark brown, almost black liquid, with a swell cover of medium tan foam. I smell dark chocolate and a touch of ash. A drink gives a taste heavy with chocolate, grain, malt, more coal than I like and an interesting berry sweetness. The sensation is fine for a basic stout. Would’ve like considerably more if not for that ash addition and that is my own thing.
