Description
In 2003, Tony Traen, took over Kapel van Viven from Willy De Lobel (the founder of Kapel van Viven) Since then, chapel of Viven has undergone several changes: a brand new look, an improved recipe for the Monastery of Viven and a new name. Chapel and Monastry of Viven were baptized Viven Blond and Viven Brown.
The idea to apply our Flemish brewing art to non-Flemish beers haunted Tony and together with Dirk Naudts (owner of the Proef brewery), he developed the recipes of the promising Viven Ale, Viven Porter, Viven Imperial IPA and Viven Master IPA. These exceptional beers, that would truly tempt any beer connoisseur, have been successfully launched onto the beer market in 2010, making them accessible to a wider audience of beer lovers.
For Tony and Krystle Traen, the driving forces behind the brewery, Viven has been a passion for over twenty years.
Krystle, one of the few female brewers in Belgium, is responsible for the taste of the different beers in the range. She composes the recipes and brews the first test batches in the kettles in Damme. When a new beer is tasted and approved by Krystle, the production moves to the Proefbrouwerij in Lochristi to be able to brew higher volumes. Tony is responsible for the administration, transport and sales. He started the Viven story, more than twenty years ago, in the little town of Vivenkapelle and turned it into an international brand.

Amberkleurig bier met weinig schuim. Smaak is fruitig zoet met iets van sinaasappel, wat appel en druiven. Niet onaardig maar ook niet echt bijzonder.

Bottle at home. Nice typical darker red barley wine color, average sized off-white to beige head. Aroma and flavor are malts, lightly some metal / iron, caramel lightly, caramelized sugars a bit as well. I noticed someone saying "barley water or barley wine" and I get it, it's kinda thin but it does have the flavor it's supposed to have I'd say. So I like it, but yes, it is watery and thin.

9/X/21 - 33cl bottle from Bierhalle Deconinck (Vichte), shared @ home, BB: 22/XII/22 (2021-1146)
Pretty clear ruby red to brown beer, big irregular crackling beige head, unstable falls down quickly, non adhesive. Aroma: lots and lots of (over)ripe banana, yeasty, caramel malts, sweet impression. MF: ok carbon, medium body. Taste: bit malty, lots of alcohol, very yeasty, bit oxidized, sweet caramel, sugary, spicy touch. Aftertaste: more banana, caramel, alcohol, sugary. A pretty watery and weak excuse for a barley wine…

Bottle (well out of date !) from Craft Beer Oasis, Crewe. Pours a hazy rich chestnut brown with a small cream/yellow head. Bottle conditioned, so gets gradually clousier. Floral hops to the fore in the aroma, along with honey and peanuts. In the mouth, marmalade jumps out at you immediately. Traditional hops are close behind, and they gradually take over. Hops remain in the finish, and some of the alcoholic strength comes through. Very nice and dangerously drinkable !

0.33 l bottle from 'Hubo's Drankboetiek', best before June 2022. Slightly hazy, golden with a medium large, slightly fluffy, almost stable, white head. Sweetish, rather fruity-floral, minimally resiny aroma of passion fruit, mango, pineapple and orange. Quite sweet, moderately bitter, rather fruity-floral, slightly grassy and a bit resiny taste of pineapple, passion fruit, kumquat, light spruce and traces of bubblegum, followed by a short, gently bitter, moderately bitter, slightly grassy finish. Thin to medium body, gently effervescent mouthfeel, average carbonation. Tasty, refreshing and very fruity NAIPA.

Fles thuis geprobeerd. Het is een diep donkerbruin tot zwart bier met een volle bruine schuimkraag. Het heeft een aroma van chocolade. De smaak is gebrande mout, noten, koffie en chocolade.

Tap at FOB, Rimini, Italy. Pours reddish blond, medium transparent, with fine white foam, limited. Aroma is clearly honey and floral, also hoppy/resinous. Body is average, with a little sticky, with average carbonation. Taste is a nice mix of intense sweetness and bitterness. Final is bitterish and spiced too.
