Description
In 2003, Tony Traen, took over Kapel van Viven from Willy De Lobel (the founder of Kapel van Viven) Since then, chapel of Viven has undergone several changes: a brand new look, an improved recipe for the Monastery of Viven and a new name. Chapel and Monastry of Viven were baptized Viven Blond and Viven Brown.
The idea to apply our Flemish brewing art to non-Flemish beers haunted Tony and together with Dirk Naudts (owner of the Proef brewery), he developed the recipes of the promising Viven Ale, Viven Porter, Viven Imperial IPA and Viven Master IPA. These exceptional beers, that would truly tempt any beer connoisseur, have been successfully launched onto the beer market in 2010, making them accessible to a wider audience of beer lovers.
For Tony and Krystle Traen, the driving forces behind the brewery, Viven has been a passion for over twenty years.
Krystle, one of the few female brewers in Belgium, is responsible for the taste of the different beers in the range. She composes the recipes and brews the first test batches in the kettles in Damme. When a new beer is tasted and approved by Krystle, the production moves to the Proefbrouwerij in Lochristi to be able to brew higher volumes. Tony is responsible for the administration, transport and sales. He started the Viven story, more than twenty years ago, in the little town of Vivenkapelle and turned it into an international brand.

Bottle from an online shop, probably BIAB. Dark dark brown with a big tan head. Nose of coffee and roasted malts, bitter citrus. Smooth mouthfeel, dry and nutty with a higher carb than porter usually has, a lot of chocolate malt flavor. I don't get smoke, unless you count the black malt overtones, is there smoke in here? Quite a tasty little (almost imperial) porter!

Fles thuis geprobeerd LiekevdV. Het is een helder goudgeel bier met een wit schuim. Het heeft een tarwe achtige wat champagne achtige geur. De smaak is zacht, tarwe, banaan en gistachtig.

Clear and brown with no head. Aroma is malty and sweet. Flavour has a sour note that's very unpleasant. Thin bodied too. It's not good

Light body, very dry. The roast and the hop bitterness are balanced like a stout. Smoke is very mild. Nothing overtly off, but it’s a bit muddy and yeasty to me. Gollems proeflokaal Amsterdam

Sampled as Viven Spiced Ambrée Medium white head, rather dense, over almost clear ochre-amber beer. Sweet nose, aromatic, with rosewater, almonds, marzipan, amandine. Dull sweet. Bit of human sweat, and again sweet almonds, frangipane. Not yet sticky, and medium bodied at best. Very low carbonation. Low attenuation? Krystel - please! Do you really believe somebody could drink this all evening without gagging in the end? Too sweet, too sweet by miles!! Thanks to Stef!

Medium, yellowish head, fast gone over hazy copperish dark amber beer. Rainwater nose, wet dog, even putteke . Bit of coloured malts... not much else. More of the same in the mouth, with an almondy character, both sweet and bitter almonds. Faintly spicy. Quite slick but indeed watery for an 11% beer. Seriously? This is a misser, better call it Barley Water than Barley Wine. Thanks to Stef!
