Description
In 2003, Tony Traen, took over Kapel van Viven from Willy De Lobel (the founder of Kapel van Viven) Since then, chapel of Viven has undergone several changes: a brand new look, an improved recipe for the Monastery of Viven and a new name. Chapel and Monastry of Viven were baptized Viven Blond and Viven Brown.
The idea to apply our Flemish brewing art to non-Flemish beers haunted Tony and together with Dirk Naudts (owner of the Proef brewery), he developed the recipes of the promising Viven Ale, Viven Porter, Viven Imperial IPA and Viven Master IPA. These exceptional beers, that would truly tempt any beer connoisseur, have been successfully launched onto the beer market in 2010, making them accessible to a wider audience of beer lovers.
For Tony and Krystle Traen, the driving forces behind the brewery, Viven has been a passion for over twenty years.
Krystle, one of the few female brewers in Belgium, is responsible for the taste of the different beers in the range. She composes the recipes and brews the first test batches in the kettles in Damme. When a new beer is tasted and approved by Krystle, the production moves to the Proefbrouwerij in Lochristi to be able to brew higher volumes. Tony is responsible for the administration, transport and sales. He started the Viven story, more than twenty years ago, in the little town of Vivenkapelle and turned it into an international brand.

At βt Oud Clooster, Ghent. Pours hazy amber/dark orange with a frothy, lasting, off-white head. The aroma contains hops, yeast, caramel, fruits and malt. It tastes medium fruity sweet and medium to heavy bitter, with a long finish that is dry but not drying for the mouth. Full body, creamy texture, soft carbonation. Great aroma and palate, a smooth but convincing IPA.

Tap at beerlovers bar. Pours clear amberblonde. Good white head. Smell is weak. Some ambermalts. Taste is sharp, intense malty (ambermalts ) bit sweet, some yeast, mild butteryness. Ok but not great. Earlier Rating: 4/25/2017 Total Score: 2Sampled at Zythos 2017. Thnx for sharing, Ruben and Tim ! Pours cloudy, unclear amberblonde. Stable, fluffy white head. Smell is bit bitter. Taste is sweet, reminding me of dyacethyl, but not sure dyacethyl is actually in there. Malty. Mild smoked, perhaps ? i did not like this one...

Thank you for sharing German speaking RB Crew! Sampled 750 ml. bottle @ ZBF 2017. Completely different recipe, they made it more rounder than batch 1 since apparently people found batch 1 served at Bruges Beer Festival a bit harsh, low portion of smoked malt. They should start listening to the common dominator is what I think. This beer is far too mellow & pleasing in general even ignoring the experimental name. I suppose that they have a client base to please but makes the experimental moniker bit of a joke. Hazy orange, little white head. Nose is very Be yeast, malt, hay, grain, clean, okay but plain, lacking the USA hop flourish from batch 1. Tase is BE yeast, banana, hay, mildly bitter, very faint smoke, sugar, white bread. BE yeast, banana,... body. Very aptly brewed, there is nothing to fault here, I rate this one the same as the first one but I hope for more weirdness honestly. Just go all out if you will fail, you will fail gloriously.

Cloudy blond beer, creamy white head, pretty stable, bit adheisve. aroma: smoky touch, not much smell actually. Bit yeasty. MF: soft carbon, medium body. Taste: bitter start, bit sweet, malty, pretty yeasty, ripe banana. Aftertaste: same, with a hint of peated malts? If you're experimenting with a smoked beer, don't be afraid of the smoke. Let people taste and smell the smoke. At least, I suppose that was the experimental part of this brew?
