Overall champion beer of Britain 08 – and winner of the Bitter category. Draught, tutored tasting with Roger Protz at GBBF. Clear, copper-bronze body. Missing head. Malty to the nose. Bitter spicy hops in flavour balanced by biscuit malts. Dry bitter tail. Maybe slightly over the average of bitter British ales (06.08.208).

(Cask at GBBF, London, 6 Aug 2008) Copper colour with brief, white head. Malty, fruity nose with apricots and earthy, dusty hops. Fruity taste with notes of apricots, orange and generous doses of earthy hops in a fairly bitter finish. Solid malt foundation. Fairly dry. Probably not the best beer in Britain, but still nice.

Cask at the 3B’s, Reading. Dark chestnut brown with a reddish tint and a thin beige head; malty aroma; thin with sweet malts and slightly sour fruit flavours; caramel finish. A pleasing mild.

[Cask at Horse & Jockey, Reading] Pale gold, negligible head, slight but prickly carbonation. Initially sweet and fruitty - almost a hint of west country scrumpy about it! Unfortunately this soon descended into dusty nothingness with just a hint of bitterness, rather reminiscent of a macro lager. Failed to live up to its early promise.

[Handpump at Horse & Jockey, Reading] Deep amber with a small lasting white head. Fresh citrus aroma. Tasted initially malty with such an intense earthy bitterness that I feared I may struggle to drink it. Fortunately the bitterness was followed by a big citrus kick that made everything OK. Much more flavoursome and interesting than your average bitter, this is not bad at all.

Cask handpump @ The Monk’s Retreat, Reading RG1, England.Unclear light to medium amber orange color with a average, frothy, good lacing, mostly lasting, off-white head. Aroma is moderate malty, caramel, fruity, tropic fruit - mango ! moderate hoppy, citrus, buttery, notes of toffee. Flavor is moderate sweet and bitter with a average to long duration. Good balanced. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is flat to soft. (040508)

Cask @ Wenlock Arms, Clear golden with tiny head. Clear golden with tiny white head. Sweet aroma with floral hops. Sweet flavor with hints of caramel and hops. Ends bitter.

Cask gravity at Reading BF 08. Hazy deep brown colour with lasting beige head. Getting towards the end of the barrel I fear. Bit rubbery on aroma. Probably needs a re-rate. But condition is good and flavour is a bit earthy.
