Lots of thanks to Marcus for this little gem. 6oz. bottle. Poured into a hock glass. There’s a very strong aroma. Oak. Dark caramel. Prunes. Almost medicinal. Dark ruby toned color with no head. Full bodied with virtually no carbonation. Flavor is wood, dark fruit, tannin, brandy. Sort of coats the tongue. Heat is not an issue. Finish is dry, but not really bitter. Just a little chalky. Definitely vinous.

12 oz. bottle from alohaC. First thing you notice on this one is the label - they’re quite proud of the GABF Gold Medal in 2002. A complete wrap around label, interesting. Pour is a nice orange - amber, cloudy with soft carbonation and some floaties. Nice, rocky white head tops. Very nice looking in the glass. Aroma of sweet citrus (grapefruit) hops, and some resin as well. The taste initially features the citrus (though, its more Clementine / tangerine fruit) hop, then a nice sold malt backbone is revealed. Really nice balance in this one. Finish is clean and sharp bitterness. Mahalo nui loa Christian, this was a very nice one.

Draft. Rich ruby/mahogony beer with a nice tan head. Roasty, chocolate, citrus aroma. Chocolate, light roast, caramel, citrus flavor with good backing hops. Alcohol present. Lingering chocolate, mocha, citrus, pine, alcohol. Nice complexity. Actually blends nicely.

On tap at the Hopyard, Pleasanton back in October. It poured a clear copper-ish red with a thin white head. It was served a bit on the cold side. The aroma is subdued – sleepy. I get sweet sugar malts, cherry hard candy, dark fruitiness that leans toward the light side and a note of alcohol. The alcohol nose is almost nothing considering the ABV. It comes off thick and viscous, how I prefer a barleywine, ushering in a brief muted wood note followed by sweet fruitiness like stewed cherries, plums and sweet dark grapes. A rye malt twang arrives about midway and plays beautifully against the fruity sweetness. Toward the finish a dryer red wine flavor wells up to aid the rye malts in fighting off the syrupy sweet fruitiness. Wow, awesome. The more I consume the more I like it.

6oz bottle picked up at Ledger’s in Berkeley. Pours a brackish brown navy bean soup and almost no head. The aroma is simply huge to start. It smells like a chocolate rum cake. Wow, amazing aroma. I get creamy toffee, caramel and chocolate. Next I picked up a big ole whiff of alcohol. There’s also the standard barleywine dark fruitiness coming from prunes and dates. I even smell that a loud truck drove by while they were bottling this bottle. It smells like an uneven unspoken moment of tension. It’s faint but it’s there. The flavor does not disappoint after the aroma has set the plate. Smooth and rich with an initial burst of caramel candy. This is gooood. The dark fruitness enters just after with prunes and dates. Then by midway the malt richness returns with toffee, creamy caramel candy and chocolate. There is also an understated woodiness running through the backyard of the flavor experience toting along a splash of booze. It is toasty too. This one really comes together for me.

Beautiful hazy copper color. Nice hoppy aroma, resiny and fruity (Cascade). The flavor is a bit drier than expected, at least the hopping is very good, resiny most of all, a bit fruity and lightly astringent.

12oz bottle-pours a foamy tan head and hazy copper/orange color. Aroma is bitter citrus/pine hops, secondary sweet medium malt-caramel/toffee backbone. Taste is bitter pine/citrus hops, some secondary medium malt-caramel,, tannins, herbal, spices, metallic. Medium body. Nice Thanks Wasatch.

Draft. Amber beer with a whitish head. Low citrus/earth aroma. Rich malty (a bit of darker malt) flavor with some slight earth and citrus. Mediumbody. Lingering caramel and earth/citrus. I’m just not digging the Bravos.
