Founded in 2015, Frankendael Brewing has one mission: making craft beer for the new generation of drinkers. Breaking away from the norms in the industry, we focus on making beer with great drinkability, exceptional quality and a flavor twist. The result is a range of easy-to-drink beer that looks, sounds, smells and tastes irresistible.

Our brand takes inspiration from Pop Art and comics. Collaborating with two talented designers, Tom Bogman and Jeroen Canton, we’ve created something truly unique and in tune with our audience. 330ml bottle @ monthly tasting, Chez Sophie, Sep'18. Thanks Simon for this. Pours gold with a light mist, white head. Spicy coriander on the nose, taste is markedly sweet, spicy with some bright triple yeast esters. Marks lost for the awful branding.

Belgian style tripel pimped with Szechuan pepper, longneck bottle - with, sorry to say, quite sexist label - grabbed from a shelf in one of these Antwerp nightshops that sell a good amount of beers, can't remember the name... Comes from one of the now many Amsterdam microbreweries and contract breweries, but one I never heard of so far. Has been resting in my cellar for a few months now but probably had a hard time at the shelf of said shop long before that. Anyway: medium thick, off-white, moussy head leaving practically no lacing and quickly breaking into one big gap in the middle, over a hazy 'old gold' coloured beer with light peachy tinge. Aroma of indeed pronounced (dry) Szechuan pepper fighting for dominance with strong dusty old coriander seed, dried dill, white bread, young 'jenever', ripe banana and even chewing gum, baking soda, freshly cut red apple, straw, green bell peppers (probably just the Szechuan pepper talking again), moist cigarette tobacco, pineapple from a can, dried orange peel (curaçao). Fruity onset, strong isoamylacetate (banana ester - quite 'bubblegummy' here), notes of red apple, pear and pineapple, residual white sugariness sticking to the teeth a bit, sourish undercurrent accentuated by lively, but for this style not overly harsh, minerally carbonation; slick, lean body, 'white' bready and cereally maltiness with a layer of honeyish residual sugar on top, leading to growing soapy spiciness from a very generous dosage of coriander seed but also developing a peppery heat thanks to the Szechuan pepper, a heat underlined by a 'jeneverish', bit astringent alcohol effect. Late, bit leafy hop bitterishness gets a bit lost in this cheap and bothersome alcoholic dominance, but the curaçao stands strong and delivers an old dry citrus peel 'freshness'. Dusty old spice rack, from both the pepper and the coriander seed, remains however the key feature, embedded in a classic sweet and bubblegummy Belgian tripel profile. The heat from the pepper lingers a bit after swallowing - fortunately, as it enlivens an otherwise boring profile, but still it is no match for that obnoxious 'jenever' alcohol aspect. Neither the label nor the beer itself convey good taste in my opinion: if the intention was to create a plain, sweet and cliché tripel spiked with Szechuan pepper which has no real business in this kind of beers to begin with, then mission fully accomplished. Reminds me a bit of Jolly Roger, the Uiltje / Gulpener collab, also a stereotypical bubblegum and coriander tripel cheaply pimped with peppers, albeit of a very different kind. Tripel seems to be among the hardest classic European beer styles to qualitatively improve in a tasteful and enduring manner - a true challenge for the American(ized) craft beer movement, it seems… Then again, screaming for attention with a cheaply sexist label mentioning 'tits' is another way of approaching this matter, I guess.

33cl bottle. A slightly hazy golden beer with a mid-sized most good lasting white head. Aroma of dry grassy bitter hops, pale malt, hints of citrus. Taste of soft citrusy hops, dry grassy hops, pale malt, floral hops, medium bitterness.

Bottle at home. Big fluffy white head atop a clear golden beer, lots of visible carbonation. Soft spicy saison yeast, light herbs, dry malts, mineral water, light flowers, fresh baked bread crust. Light sweet and bitter. Over light bodied with quite some sparkly carbonation. Not getting much fruits here. Quite nice for the low abv, but the name and label are a little ridiculous to be honest. Nice stuff to drink at a bbq or something. One of the better beers ever made at the Noord Hollandse.

(bottle, 33cl) Hazy, murky golden colour with a short and off-white foamy head. Dusty, bready and slightly oxidized malty nose with notes of orange peel, caramel and slightly herbal spice. Sweet flavour, medium to full bodied with a tame carbonation. Slightly bready and juicy malty base with hoppy and yeasty spicy, accompanied by notes of orange zests; stickily sweet malty and restrained hop bitter finish. Utterly disappointing. 02.V.18

(bottle, 33cl) Hazy, golden colour with a blond and short foamy head. Slightly dusty, bready and slightly juicy malty aroma with a whiff of fruity hops in the background. Mildly sweet and delicately bitter flavour, light to medium bodied with a tame carbonation. Slightly bready malty base with notes of coffee underneath; fruity hops tune in towards the dry and slightly oxidised finish. Would not order a second one. 02.V.18
