Robbert Orano started White Pony. He is a home brewer with Belgian roots. He has a great preference for craft beer and heavier Belgian beers. The White Pony brewery makes beer in an artisanal way, unpasteurized and unfiltered. And bottles the beer with respect for the old tradition. But all this is done with an innovative view of the brewing process.

Murky amber with a frothy, off-white head. Aroma a mix of citrus, caramel and something that, if unkindly seen, might be ear wax. Taste is bitter and full of orange pith and aloe vera at the finish. Medium bodied, moderate carbonation. Interesting, and not bad, but not tasty either.

Bottle. Color: Dark reddish brown, thin beige head. Aroma: Dark dried fruit, caramel, yeasty, boozy. Taste: Dark dried fruit, sweetish, toffee. Boozy hints. Over medium to full body, below average carbonation. Quite smooth wheat malt body. Over moderate to medium sweet, light bitterness. It's been quite a while since I've had a beer from White Pony. This one is a nice one, although it's not a typical Weizenbock in my opinion.

Blikje thuis gedronken. Goudgeel troebel bier met mooie schuimkraag die als een film blijft liggen. Aroma is hoppig. Smaak is hoppig en fruitig. Nasmaak is bitter.

Bottle. Color: Clear orangish red,off-white head. Aroma: Tart, lemon, hints of red fruit. Taste: Lime, candy sugar, hints of red fruit, tart apple, hints of oak wood. Moderate to over moderate tart, moderate sweet, light bitterness. Just below medium body. Quite thin actually. Just bellw average carbonation. Mwah, ok Flemish Red interpretation but disappointkng compared with the real ones.

Another White Pony beer delivered by Belgian Happiness. Always pleasing to get to try a brew like this. I pop the top to the 33 cl bottle and make a pour inside of an ABGB tulip glass. The appearance is a cola colored liquid followed by a strong head of pillowy light tan foam. There is a decent scent to it, dark fruit, booze and whole grain bread. And I get to the drink. Really good, I can say right off that I do not recall a better barley wine I have ever had. And I like the style considerably. Raisins, ripe plums, a copious amount of whisky, bread, wood, malt, barley, caramel and sorghum. Full in its mouthfeel which other barley wines often fall short of. Complex and good that way. I'll wait for the alcohol to kick in but that is all right. A prime level beer in general and barley wine specifically imho.

Flesje thuis gedronken. Diep donkerbruin tot zwart bier met matig beige schuim dat snel weg trekt. Aroma van koffie, chocolade, en karamel. Smaak is zoet, koffie, gebrande mout en karamel. Nasmaak is iets bitter en kleverig in de mond.

Almost clear reddish deep amber beer, small pale tan head. Smooth palate, semi dry, decent fine carbonation. The malts are light but have a decent depth of caramel with touches of cream and unsweet toffee. The Amarone barrelling brings a nice ripe red wine fruitiness that has a vague touch of port about it, goes well with the malt base. A little barrell dankness on the back end and a touch of alcohol spice. Overall all this a pretty decent and drinkable barleywine.

White Pony calls this beer “A dense and soft quadrupel aged in Sherry and Whisky oak barrels.” My 33 cl bottle was just delivered by Belgian Happiness, the first sampling out of the box. I have the Chimay glass in place, lift the cap and pour. Dark amber-brown in color with a thin but promptly recharged skim of light tan bubbles. The scent is boozy, stewed dark fruit. I lift for a drink, damn, how does the brewer keep delivering such good quads? Chocolate, black plums, currants, whole grain bread, figs, some oakiness, malt and whisky. A first class, dense sensation. This is a potent, tasty brew.
