About
Based in the heart of Stockport for almost two centuries, and owning around 260 tenanted and managed pubs, inns and hotels across the North West, ‘Robinsons’ is one of oldest and most respected names in British brewing history.

Robinsons took over Hartleys brewery in 1982, closing down the Ulverston plant in 1994 and transferring the Hartley brands to the Unicorn brewery. Robinsons bought the rights to the Ward brands in 2006 but subsequently sold some of those brands to Maxim Beer Co.

Solid looking dark beer with a strong malty, chocolatey and alcohol aroma. The flavour is liquorice, bitter and very strong. Overall a good beer.

A red-brown beer with a fine brown disappearing head. The aroma is sweet with notes of alcohol and fruit. The flavor is powerful with notes of fruit and caramel. A really nice beer.

Aroma of plums and raisins. Brown, no head. Flavor of plums, sugar, malt, and hops. Thinner than many barleywines I have had.

Pours a copper color with a white head. You can kinda smell hops in there but there is not much there. Flavor is about the same, i can get the hops but not much else, kinda watery. Excellent lacing to the beer. Neither good or bad really.

Pours a deep ruby color. Aromoa is kinda of winey with hints of chocolate. Flavor is fruit. I can taste prunes, plums and pears. Goes down quite smooth and warm. For the amount of alcohol in this it is hidden in the flavor.

Bottled. Nice dark amber color. Pours with a good head for an English ale. Taste is a tad dry, complemented by a subtle hop profile. A decent example of a "Northern" style.

Bottled. Very light in color and taste, at least for the style. Our homebrew club mention Goldings and Fuggles in the hop nose. This also has more caramel taste than expected. A good session beer with a clean finish.

(Cask)Dark amber; slight head. very light hopnose, a bit of coloured malts. very well-balanced taste, between British (discreet) hopsand malts, slightly caramelised. Palate is a bit empty. Caramel much obvious in the aftertaste - even butterscotch - but hops are gone. A bit above average. Nothing exciting.

Very dark brown. Brown-yellow head, dissipating. Nose of ripe fruit, especially mango & banana, raisins too, vinous, and finally hops and coffee in the background. Very short sweet, fruity onset, then a harsh bitterbite, much more burnt malts than hops. Retronasal like gingerbread having been too long in the oven. Rich, reasonably chewy mouthfeel. This overly-roasted taste is just a bit too much. Pity of the harsh palate. The first impression in nose & taste is superb. A quality old ale. I wish I could have it on draught again, to compare.
