Description
For us, good living means exploring – the opposite of “comfortable.” It’s not just about craft, but about questing, questioning, transforming “What If” into “Here’s How,” by way of an experiment so crazy, it just might work.

Exploration is the line from local beer maker to World-Class Brewer. It’s a pioneer impulse, and it sets the authentic, rural heartbeat of Southern Tier. It’s how we got here. And by the time others catch up, it’ll be why we’re already somewhere else.

From our wildly innovative founder, Phin DeMink, who’s still a daily inspiration, to the new generation of brewers, thinkers, and drinkers who share our pursuit of what’s next, we keep honing the creative edge of brewing discovery.

So this is an open invitation, to anyone who gives a damn about the difference between a well-crafted beer and a stunningly satisfying encounter with the new. Join us on the road less traveled.

An amber beer with a thin beige head. The aroma is sweet with notes of caramel and flowers - like sticking Your head into a blooming bush, but also a nice deal of hops. The flavor is sweet malty with notes of caramel and hops. OK IPA.

I am growing ever fonder of this brewer. In this case I am rating the porter - a beer style I am not overly fond of. I have had this one a couple of times. Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer pours a dark black color with a medium sized dark brown head. The aroma is moderate roasty malts, strong chocolate and floral hops. The mouthfeel is moderately thick. The flavor is strong with chocolate, coffee and roasty malts. There is a bitter hop finish that lingers. As I said, I am not a huge porter fan but these guys have made one that I like rather well.

This is the third Southern Tier beer I have had and I have not been disappointed with any of them. The porter poured dark brown with an inviting off-white head. Roasted malts dominated the aroma. The flavor was also filled with the roasted malts, but also revealed hints of chocolate and coffee with some burnt sugar. Seemed to be more bitter hop presence than other porters I have had, but not enough to detract from chocolate, coffee notes. I did detect a metallic aftertaste that I hope was just an anomaly. Pleasant medium body.

At Akkurat
Beautiful copper color; creamy head. Very nice hoppy aroma, a bit fuity, resinous. Medium malty body, strong hoppiness, quite resinous, ends long, with some caramel.

A direct pour raises a small white head that leaves a beautiful lace on the glass. Orange hazy body that gives off a sweet fruity aroma. Light sweetness in a very simple flavor profile. Nice palate, sweet spritzy start with a bit of dryness in the finish. Not great, but I’ve had many better tripels. I guess it’s the mark of a great brewery when you can say the worst beer they make is a 3.3!

12oz bottle compliments of Shadey, consumed on 9/13/2005. Clear, light orange with almost a pinkish-tangerine hue. Vigorous bubbles rising and a foamy white head. Smells hoppy, very hoppy, with light pine, some floral notes and a bit of dry wheat. Pretty cool for an American wheat to have this nice of a hops aroma. Flavor is very hoppy again, and quite dry, with a sour wheat and grapefruit rind note. Wow! Full on ruby red grapefruit, bursting with it. Light pale grains. Not sweet, yet not too dry or astringent. Really hops oriented with dry, sour wheat and more grapefruit on the finish. Substantial/semi-substantial mouthfeel. Wheat can add a good deal of chewiness if done right, and I think it is here. Simple but effective.

The combination of citrus, spice and carbonation reminded me of a breakfast cocktail — or maybe it was the strong orange, nectarine flavor that had me thinking of breakfast. Orange citrus aroma, orange citrus taste with a medium body that would cling more to the palate if not for the fizziness. Semi-sweet malts on top of all that.

Very similar to an English Strong Ale with it’s roasty qualities, and toffee-like sweetness balanced by a decent dose of dry hops in the finish - quite a nice beer.

On draught at MacGregor’s in Rochester, NY. Big and black with a tan head. Completely opaque. Heavy aroma of chocolate and coffee come easily even before this warms up. Rich dark roast coffee flavor, with some licorice coming through. Smooth creamy thick palate. Coating. Nice bitter finish. Very well done Imperial Stout.
