Description
It all started in 1986. Sure, many things have changed since the early days of Harpoon, but much has stayed the same. We still love brewing beer and enjoying it with friends.
In July 2014, Harpoon became an employee owned company, with 48% of the company given to employees through the establishment of an ESOP. An E-what? ESOP stands for Employee Stock Ownership Plan. It is a mechanism by which a company contributes to its employees’ retirement by allocating shares to them which it repurchases…..yadda, yadda, yadda… Here’s what it means: we are employee owned, we are an independent craft brewer, and you bet we’re damn proud of it.
In 2024, Harpoon and Smuttynose merged, forming Barrel One Collective.

Deep dark brown coloured body with a thick, but very fast-dying tan and light brown head that finishes at just a single centimetre tall. Aroma of roasted malt, molasses, oatmeal, a bit of grain and some softer brown sugar and slight peaty notes with a lot of malt here and some vanilla as well as cream on the finish. Medium-bodied; Relatively strong molasses and caramelised sugar flavours show first with a big kick of vanilla, cream and even nuts here, along with some pitted fruit sweetness that shows nicely, especially at the end once the malts are gone. Aftertaste is smooth with the vanilla, oatmeal and slight graininess here, but the cream, milk and lactose elements help out and temper the finish without much bitterness at all, but the sweetness is still here as are the mellow earthiness. Overall, a nice and elegant beer with a good kick from the vanilla, cream and sugars and not much else from the pungency, alcohol or yeast here, but that's the way it should be. I sampled this twelve ounce can, purchased from Giant in Alexandria (Potomac Yard), Virginia on 08-October-2021 for US$1,99, packaged on 23-August-2021 and sampled at my house here in Washington on 07-February-2022.

Ganz ordentliches Light-Bier, fruchtig, harzig, trocken, hopfig, spritzig, passt. Bin kein großer Fan von leichten Bieren, aber das schmeckt.

12 oz. bottle from Total Wine. Pours a milky gold color with a large khaki head and great retention. Decent lacing. Predominantly light coffee aroma. Similar flavors. Light coffee-forward flavor with barely any pumpkin spice flavors. Overall, not much of a pumpkin beer, and I'm not a coffee fan, but the flavors are light, subtle, and easy drinking. Not bitter. Medium body and below average carbonation. Okay.

Schönes Wit, in der Nase schon Orange und Koriander. Im Trunk setzt sich das fort, recht leicht ingesamt, gut trinkbar. Passt.

OK, so I had the ufo pumpkin, but not this stuff. I'm curious if its the same thing. Got this can off the clearance rack at JR's. Smell is pumpkin spice. Initial impression is decent creamy carbonation. Yes there is some pumpkin spice in there, but its not as bad as some pumpkin brews. Its a little more mellow when it comes to the spices but it still is a little rude at times. date code is 7/2021 so it is a little dated I guess. Goes down fairly easy for a 6% brew. Better than expected but still not refreshing JMHO. I've tasted better pumpkin beers that were easy to get along with but at least this stuff supposedly has real pumpkin puree in it.

OK, after a positive letter from the IRS, this beer hast to taste good. Looks like any other punky beer, somethin like a heff. Smell is spicy punky sweet. Quite strong on the initial taste bud blast. Pretty good CO2, good sizzle down the hatch. Some medicinal attributes on the finish.

12 oz. can from Total Wine. Pours a hazy gold color with an off white head and good retention. Scattered chains of lacing. Beer aroma. The vanilla flavor is most dominant, with some light coffee flavor in the background and finish. To me, it tastes like a cream ale without the grainy mouthfeel. Medium body and carbonation. No bitterness. Not bad, but would be better without the coffee, IMHO.

Can from the packie. Mostly clear deep gold in color with a frothy off white head that persists. Citrus earthy pine and light tropical notes against a solid bready light caramel maltiness. Old school at its finest.
