Description
De Kromme Haring is all about surprising, well-made, delicious and drinkable beers.
Biologist and homebrewer Stephen Grigg travelled from America via the UK to settle in the Netherlands as (homebrewery) De Kromme Haring. After meeting beer-afficionado Gijs van Wiechen, who invited him to brew the anniversary beer for infamous bar-dive Kafe Belgie, the two decided to "go pro" in 2014.
After the first tentative, educational and sometimes frustrating steps in contractbrewing they quickly decided that they needed their own system and place to pursue their aproach to brewing. This cunning plan came to fruition when they opened their very own brewpub in september 2016, with the brewery installed in december 2016.
With over 20 years of brewing experience, we have cultivated a deep love for English malts and American hops. However, we love yeast even more and believe that the quality of fermentation is at the core of all well-made beer. Knowing how to work with many different kinds of yeast, both "clean" and "wild", is what sets us apart.
Our brewery and yeast lab allows us to experiment with lesser known and used yeast strains in our brewery. Part of our brewery is even dedicated to stainless steel fermenting with wild yeasts like Brettanomyces and/or blended cultures, creating surprising and delicious flavours.

33cl Bottle from Drinks & Gifts. Hazy orange colour, off-white head. Aroma of sweet malts, orange, pineapple, resin. Flavour is sweet, malty, goopy, old hops, very much like an oldskool US DIPA that traveled too much. Medium bodied. Decent beer but not the NEIPA I was hoping for.

Bottle, gusher. Golden pour. Aroma of soapy nettle, herbal hop and malt. Taste has soapy herbal hop, malt, nettle, grassy and some caramel. Way too carbonated. The english do this better.

Huge foxy cream head, bit irregular, over virtually black beer. Smoked ham, phenolicΒ², sweetened tarr, freshly laid tarmac. Smoked, phenolic but thankfully a little less intense than the nose suggested. Good sweet malt underbuild. Good carbonation, quite slick, bit sticky and some alcoholwarmth. The nose might come as a shock to the unaware, but I liked it!

330ml bottle, thank you MosterMagnet for this! Pours dark brown, alsmost pitch black with some beige foam. Nose is powerful, filled with roast character, light cocoa, not much sweetness there.Taste reveals a sturdy body but again without much residual sweetness. Lots of roast bitterness, even getting close to Black IPA but maybe too much roast bitterness here and not enough hop bitterness. I do like this kind of stouts as well, they don't need to be sweet, sticky and syrupy.

Pours black. Big off white head. Smell is roasty. Taste is roasty, rather dry. Surprisingly bitter. Strong flavored, but a bit one dimensional perhaps. OK to low body, with a high ( way to high) Carbo. Bitterness last. Roastyness is in place, but has free play due to lack of complexity. Alcohol is noticeably strong, but not boozy. All and all, a good beer, but nothing I'd seek out.

Bottle. Color: Almost black, light brown head. Aroma: Dark malt, coffee, mocha. Taste: Roasted malt, a lot of coffee and mocha. Smooth, creamy and almost powdery mouthfeel. Moderate bitter and medium sweet. Bittery palate at finish. Over medium body, below average carbonation. Cold alcoholic coffee... Very nice.
