Description
De Kromme Haring is all about surprising, well-made, delicious and drinkable beers.

Biologist and homebrewer Stephen Grigg travelled from America via the UK to settle in the Netherlands as (homebrewery) De Kromme Haring. After meeting beer-afficionado Gijs van Wiechen, who invited him to brew the anniversary beer for infamous bar-dive Kafe Belgie, the two decided to "go pro" in 2014.

After the first tentative, educational and sometimes frustrating steps in contractbrewing they quickly decided that they needed their own system and place to pursue their aproach to brewing. This cunning plan came to fruition when they opened their very own brewpub in september 2016, with the brewery installed in december 2016.

With over 20 years of brewing experience, we have cultivated a deep love for English malts and American hops. However, we love yeast even more and believe that the quality of fermentation is at the core of all well-made beer. Knowing how to work with many different kinds of yeast, both "clean" and "wild", is what sets us apart.

Our brewery and yeast lab allows us to experiment with lesser known and used yeast strains in our brewery. Part of our brewery is even dedicated to stainless steel fermenting with wild yeasts like Brettanomyces and/or blended cultures, creating surprising and delicious flavours.

Draught @ Kafé België, Utrecht. Aroma is sweet and malty with smoke and licorice. Flavour is heavy with smoke, slightly salty licorice. Finishes with lingering ash and toffee. Stuffy and a bit sticky. Drinkability is not that great but I am not getting enough richness or complexity in exchange. Somewhat pleasant still.

Tap @ UBF ’15. Cloudy orange color. Uneven off white head (big bubbles), some lacing. Aroma’s of resin, alpha acid, citrus, herbal hops. Retronasal: resinous, malty and fruity sweetness. Flavor: Moderate sweet with a light sourness. Medium bodied.

Tap @ UBF ’15. Cloudy red/amber color. Dense head, pinkish. Aroma’s: lactic sour, fruit/raspberries. Flavor: moderate sour, fruity. Light bodied. Dry finish, no new flavor.

Tap @ UBF ’15. Dark brown color with a brownish head. Aroma’s: eh, smokey, sweet coffee. Retronasal: dark malty sweet, smoky, roasted. Flavor is moderate sweet, mild, light bitter. Medium bodied. Finish is somewhat dry, moderate bitter.

Hazy pink-red colour. Flavour is very straightforward - raspberry. Very fragrant and perfumed with a sweet and sour tang.

van de tap op @UBF15, oranje/amber met toch wel een slechte witte kraag. Aroma komt zoetig binnen, fruitig en een zweem van gist in het glas, jammer dat het bier zo koud getapt is. Smaken zijn medium zoet, medium bitter, den, citrus, hopbittertje, grapefruit, grassig, maar ook een beetje dun met vrij lage co2. best ok en smaakvol.

van de tap op @UBF15, oogt zwart met bruine kraag die mooi blijft staan. Aroma van rookmouten, chocolade, mout, zoetig, iets laurier. Smaken van chocolade, geroosterde mouten, lichte gebrande toets, rookmouten, zachte en glad van textuur. medium bitter, evenzo zoet, matige body, prima te drinken en ook niet verkeerd, gewoon erg lekker ...

van de tap op @UBF15, Ha eindelijk een zuur bier op een festival, dat zouden er van mij veel meer mogen wezen. Tijdens het tappen kwamen bij mij de framboos en de zuurtjes al binnen. ziet er na het tappen mooi uit, ietwat wazig rood/roze met mooie roze kraag. Aroma van goede fruitigheid van de framboos en een mooie zuurcomplexiteit die iig niet eentonig is. Smaken zijn framboos, zwak zoet, goede zuurtonen (had mij wat complexer gemogen), maar ook vrij licht en af en toe komt er iets metaligs door, maar niet vervelend. Absoluut één van de verrassingen van het festival voor mij.

Tap @ UBF 2015, small sample. Slight hazy orange to amber color, short head. Aroma of grapefruit, soft citrus, bit cookie, slight grassy. Soft to medium bitter in taste, caramel malty backbone. Very easy drinker for the ABV. Tasty.

Tap @ UBF 2015, medium sample. Slight hazy amber to reddish color, medium frothy slight pinkish head. Aroma of raspberry, bit lactic, fruity, slight funky. Soft sour in taste, quite fruity, slight bitterness from cassis even. Good balance, good tasty beer.
