Description
Hogs Back Brewery was founded in 1992 in Tongham, and bought by current owner Rupert Thompson in 2012. In 2014, Hogs Back planted its own hop field on land adjacent to the brewery, bringing the traditional but near-extinct White Bine hop variety back to its Surrey home.
We’re a small family-owned brewery tucked away in the village of Tongham, in the heart of the old Surrey hop-growing region. Still an independently owned brewery, Hogs Back owe much of their success to their iconic, flagship real ale 'TEA' (Traditional English Ale) - a firm favourite of cask-conditioned real ale drinkers throughout the UK and a multi-award winning brew year-in, year-out.

Bottled. Deep ambery brown colour with a small beige head. Aroma is chocolate, some sweet malts, mild spiciness, dried fruits and some mild nutty and toasted notes as well. Flavour is roasted, some slight spices, mild nutty and a bit wooden tones. Nice aroma, and the flavour is nice too, also more settled than the aroma.

[Cask at the Alehouse, Reading.] A pale amber pour with a loose white head; lemony aroma; rather watery with a grassy bitterness, some lemon, and bready malt; then a sweet lemony finish. Lacking depth, but that’s hardly a surprise at this ABV.

Cask at the brewery tap. Aroma has malts and dark fruit plus a good waft of honey. Opaque amber. Bubbly off-white head. Like the aroma the underlying T.E.A. is there with light grains and slightly sour berries. However the honey sweetness is in throughout. They work together. Although the sour berries are then most prominent into the astringent finish. Medium bodied. Slick. Average-fizzy carbonation. Long and as already noted astringent finish. Nice enough amd it works but without being particularly impressive.
