Description
Hogs Back Brewery was founded in 1992 in Tongham, and bought by current owner Rupert Thompson in 2012. In 2014, Hogs Back planted its own hop field on land adjacent to the brewery, bringing the traditional but near-extinct White Bine hop variety back to its Surrey home.
We’re a small family-owned brewery tucked away in the village of Tongham, in the heart of the old Surrey hop-growing region. Still an independently owned brewery, Hogs Back owe much of their success to their iconic, flagship real ale 'TEA' (Traditional English Ale) - a firm favourite of cask-conditioned real ale drinkers throughout the UK and a multi-award winning brew year-in, year-out.

Cask atThe Partridge, Bromley. Heavy citrus nose, splosh of apricot, peach. Taste takes time to develop - peach, white grape, lots of bitter citrus. Oodles of bitter fruits in the close. Tidy brew.

Can from the brewery shop. Clear copper gold. Thick foamy white head. Aroma is malt led - pretty chewy - with light citrus and an almost saline element. Flavourwise it's then initially quite sweet - sugary fruit and malts. A light sour edge. Some equally light bitterness in the mix. Light. Slick. Soft-fizzy carbonation. Long dry somewhat astringent finish. Had worse but as much a Gold as an IPA.

Hand pulled half pint in my local Spoons on 10th March 2026. Bright light golden body, white crust on top. Citrus lead, malty centre and finish, liked it.

Cask at Wheatsheaf, Stoke. Pours golden amber with a small foamy off-white head and good lacing. There’s floral hops and lucozade in the aroma. In the mouth it is slightly bitter but with some traces of underlying sweetness. Flavour has floral hops, oranges and autumn fruits with some hints of mango coming through later. Finish is slightly dry. This lies on the border between reasonable and decent !

Wetherspoon Spring Beer Festival 2026, Beer#8. Golden coloured with a small glow. Sweet tropical fruits are subdued by a thin texture, but they're still the main flavouring here. Has a malty influence in aroma.
