Description
Hogs Back Brewery was founded in 1992 in Tongham, and bought by current owner Rupert Thompson in 2012. In 2014, Hogs Back planted its own hop field on land adjacent to the brewery, bringing the traditional but near-extinct White Bine hop variety back to its Surrey home.

We’re a small family-owned brewery tucked away in the village of Tongham, in the heart of the old Surrey hop-growing region. Still an independently owned brewery, Hogs Back owe much of their success to their iconic, flagship real ale 'TEA' (Traditional English Ale) - a firm favourite of cask-conditioned real ale drinkers throughout the UK and a multi-award winning brew year-in, year-out.

Pours a deep mahogany, approaching black colour, with a foamy beige head, and a sweet malt aroma. The mouthfeel is nice and smooth, if a little thin, with dark fruits and roasted malt in the mix, and perhaps the tiniest hint of chocolate in the finish

Bottle picked up online, split at the Wildling tasting, Hazlemere, 28/06/20. Clear golden with a decent off white covering. Nose is orange peel, hint of biscuit, straw, light sugars. Taste comprises tangerine, floral notes, watermelon, crisp malts, grass. Medium to light bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close. Ok easy drinker.

Bought at Tesco beforethee brewery went full on psycho over SBR and trying to put their opposition our of business. Let's face it, HB's beers (at least nowadays) are shit so they're always going to have to fight dirty. Aroma has some fruitiness but a massive slab of butter to boot. Light amber. Creamy translucent white head sticks to the rim. Sweet and sour. The latter is just more prevalent. Citrus and buttery caramel. Plus underlying cardboard. Light-medium bodied. Slick, almost creamy. Soft-fizzy carbonation. Long dry aftertaste of a finish. I seem to remember that the prototype of this was OK but this is butterandhalfs those cardboard traits of a nil ABV beer even though it's actually still 2.8%. Would score more poorly if the palate didn't provide some respite.

Keg at the Wheatsheaf, Heatherside, 19/09/20. Clear golden amber with a decent off white head. Nose carries floral notes, tangerine, light melon, grass. Taste comprises tangerine, gentle citric pith, melon, light pine, airy malts, hint of passionfruit. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close splashed with modest juicy hop bitterness. Passable easy drinking sessioner.

Adding in my old ticks because I want to see how they impact my stats and some of them I will never see again. Will however re-rate them when practical. Now this one was a failure - never rebrewed and I believe the last porter/stout they have bothered brewing. Weak stuff. The Squirrel, Farnborough.
