Description
Hogs Back Brewery was founded in 1992 in Tongham, and bought by current owner Rupert Thompson in 2012. In 2014, Hogs Back planted its own hop field on land adjacent to the brewery, bringing the traditional but near-extinct White Bine hop variety back to its Surrey home.

We’re a small family-owned brewery tucked away in the village of Tongham, in the heart of the old Surrey hop-growing region. Still an independently owned brewery, Hogs Back owe much of their success to their iconic, flagship real ale 'TEA' (Traditional English Ale) - a firm favourite of cask-conditioned real ale drinkers throughout the UK and a multi-award winning brew year-in, year-out.

Red brown colour. Aroma is sweet and fruity (red fruits). Flavour has the red fruit sweetness, also hints of caramel. Rich feel. Flavour more suited to a winter beer but very pleasant.

Bottle. An unclear, copper-ish brown beer topped by a finger-thick off-white head. Pleasant grassy and lightly piney hops in the aroma, with crystal malts and a roasted touch in the aroma. A bit heavy on the carbonation, medium bodied and quite dry. Roasted notes, caramel and a fine bitterness in the flavor, but the hop flavor isn’t matching the malts, or the opposite. Bitter end with some roasted malts and caramel. Not my favorite in any way, but at least far from undrinkable. 120804

Bottle. A clear, amber beer topped by a small, white head. Caramel, lightly roasted, biscuity malts and citrusy hops on the nose. Pleasant bitterness in the flavor, with a nice fruityness. Some roasted hints, and biscuity malts. Medium body, soft on the palate, with a light bitterness in the end. A tasteful and pleasant beer indeed, but not impressive in any way. 120720
