Description
The history of the brewery dates back to 1679. At the end of the eighteenth century, Jacobus Liefmans settled in Oudenaarde and gave the brewery its name. It was around 1900 that Liefmans started filling maturation tanks with black cherries, on a small scale. Local farmers brought their excess crops of black cherries to Liefmans and swapped them for beer. One individual who played a key part in this was Rosa Merckx. She was closely involved in the brewery’s operations over several decades. Thanks to her encouragement, the cherry beer evolved into a real success story.

0,25l bottle at home. Rather old looking bottle, unsure of age. dark brown color, no head. smells oxidized, light berries, parfumy, sirupy, honey, average smell. medium body, no carbonation. tastes oxidized, sirupy, honey, peppery, bit rusty, marzipan. finishes lightly sweet with notes of oxidation, sirup and peppery notes. probably quite a bit past its prime.

Bottle. Tons of red fruit candy, cherry sorbet, a touch of wheat, light sour lactic notes. Quite sweet. Light bodied. I think I actually like this more than the alcoholic version.

Good pink head, fast gone over bright carmine red beer. Bit syrupy, but also the thumbprint of aged beer in the right way. Aromatic, sweet almonds, perfumey. Sweet. Again almondy, perfumey red fruit, cherries, and hints at fusels. Slick, heavily carbonated. Good? Certainly. But it is too perfumey by half. Truth to be told, the sampling was done in comparison with an unlicensed bottling of Liefmans Kriek straight from the lagertank, done in the early nineties. That beer just blew the Xtra away. Thanks to Yarric V for getting this elusive Colruyt special

T: artificial fruity, raspberries, bit strawberries, syrupy fruity, candy sugar, medium carbonation, no beer feeling there yet as lemonade drinkable.
