750 ml bottle. Top off, foam all over table and keyboard! Seems to be a consistent matter with Glazen Toren ales (I’m a slow learner). Great aromas - spread all over. Smells like yeast and light stone fruit with a touch of citrus. Hazy ripe apricot color with a many fingered head. Medium to full in body with creamy carbonation. Starts with light funk, citrus, candi, and some biscuit and spice. Not to mention a touch of caramel. On the way to the finish there is the confusion of light sweetness, some tartness and some woodiness. So this thing is a bit complex. I’d say it’s way underrated. Really an experience.

750 ml bottle from Marcus, for which I render sincere thanks. It opened with an unstoppable, slow gusher which gave off massive aromas of cherry and strawberry; the aroma filled the room. Poured into a glass, however, the aroma was a very slight cherry, and a great deal of dark roasted malt. Hazy mahogany color with small chunks and a respectable tan head that laced a bit. Full bodied with creamy carbonation. Flavor seems to start with cherry and chocolate, but mostly smooth dark roasted malt (not at all harsh). Some heat comes out in the middle. It turns into dark fresh fruit - more like very ripe plum rather than cooked prune. Finishes that way with a very small amount of bitter. It doesn’t need a lot of bitter, because it is not all malty/sticky like so many scotch ales. (though my hands were sticky after dealing with the gusher) Very smooth, very drinkable. I try to imagine smoke, but it’s more like coffee than smoke. And either one is pushing it. It’s just fresh dark fruit and smooth dark malt, and an ongoing chocolate note. Incredibly drinkable; not a sipper; killer session ale (literally). I’d suggest this fits the strong ale category better than the scotch ale.
