Description
Ridgeway Brewing was established in 2002 by master brewer Peter Scholey (former head brewer at Brakspear) and his wife Vanda. The name comes from the ancient trade route that winds its way through English countryside between small towns. It has been around for thousands of years, adapting with the changing times, The reason why we chose the name Ridgeway, apart from living on it, was that we hope to create lasting experiences, believe in the long term and love the outdoors.

Bottle to snifter.
Appearance: very dark brown close to black in color with a fairly quickly dissolving head that didn't leave any lace.
Aroma: sweet coffee, roasted coffee notes, black licorice, dark fruits, woody tones, faded Winter spices, and some caramel sweetness
Flavor: combines the prior noted aromas nicely together to a fine bitter to toasty and roasty quality flanked by some light sweetness; finishes with the coffee vibes, the black licorice and dark fruits
Texture: medium bodied, leaning towards the sipper side; pretty smooth along the tongue
Overall: I'd say a pretty nicely done foreign/export stout and I wouldn't mind having another bottle to possibly age.

Bottle to English pint glass.
Appearance: dark brown close to black in the glass with a two finger eggshell white foamy head which slid off nicely to leave some light lace
Aroma: dark roasted malts, sweet grains, roasted nuts, sweet earthy scents, dark fruits, cocoa powder, baker's chocolate, caramel/toffee malts and some coffee tones
Flavor: wraps up the prior noted aromas to a fair bitter blend with a mild roasty and toasty quality sliding in underneath then a subtle crisp sweetness; finishes dark fruity/cocoa powder-y/sweet grainy
Texture: light to medium bodied, some sessionability to it. Pretty darn smooth along the tongue
Overall: a pretty nicely done and we'll say here a "dark ale" as respect to the brewer who doesn't call this a porter or a stout, just a fine dark ale and worthy of returning to.

Bottle to snifter.
Appearance: dark brown in the pour but looks closer to black in the glass with a thin cap of a little off-white foamy head which slid off to leave some light concave lace
Aroma: dark roasted malts, some black licorice, dark fruits, black coffee, toast and a keen note of cocoa powder
Flavor: melds the prior noted aromas together to a fine sweet to roasty vibe; finishes dark roasty, cocoa powdery and coffee-ish
Texture: medium bodied, surely this is a sipper; pretty darn smooth along the tongue
Overall: I'd say a pretty nicely done RIS I wouldn't mind having again on a cold winter's night!

Bottle to becher glass.
Appearance: glossy rustic orange to copper color with a subtle transparency about it; two and a half fingers of white foamy head dissipated to leave some light messy lace
Aroma: earthy to floral to dried grassy hop scents mesh with a bitter malt base, somewhat herbal and dry
Flavor: combines the prior noted aromas to a bitter malty quality; herbal/earthy and floral finish
Texture: light to medium bodied, sessionable; pretty smooth along the tongue
Overall: as an ESB, this one works, I know it's not a popular style in this day and age but I don't mind this for me. Pass the fish n' chips for this one!
