Description
Traquair House is the oldest inhabitat house in Scotland and dates back to 1107 and has been lived in by the Stuart family since 1491. Traquair House Brewery lies in the wing of the house directly underneath the Chapel. It dates back to the early 1700’s and was originally a domestic brewery serving the house and the estate. It was disused in the early 1800’s but never dismantled. It gradually filled with the family junk until it was completely forgotten.
Peter Maxwell Stuart rediscovered the brewery in the early 1960’s and began brewing again as an experiment in 1965 using all the original equipment and fermenting the ales in the original oak tuns, some of which were over 200 years old. In 1990, following Peter’s death, his daughter, Catherine, took over the running of the brewery and it was expanded in 1994. Traquair employs 2 full time brewers and its rich dark ales are now exported all over the world although production remains tiny at only 1,000 hectalites a year.

[At Jyske Øldage 2004, Kolding] A brown beer with a medium amber head. The aroma is sweet malty and the flavor is sweet and quite dry. A boring beer considering that it is a Traquair production.

Bottle. Brown clolour, semi-stable tan head. Peppery, slightly roasted flavour. Creamy mouthfeel. Aftertaste also seems creamy/buttery, but in a good way. Seems to leave a hint of freshness in the back of my throat, like menthol or strong liquorice.

Deep brown body with orange-red highlights at the edges. Thin light tan head. Very spicy aroma with soy, wood, and fresh bread dough complimenting the coriander. Heavily spiced flavor with earthy yeast flavors, a touch of soy, and woody neutral malts. Kind of like a pumpernickel bread with coriander. Quite good.

Pours a very dark red/brown with a thin creamy head. Smells like dried figs. The taste is pleasant, toffeish and malty, similar enough to Jacobite that it’s obvious that they’re coming from the same brewery, but much thinner and with far less taste.. Some alcohol showing through, and some nice hoppish bitterness in the aftertaste. A bit of a dissapointment.

Had big expectations for this, and it didn’t disappoint me. It was quite expensive, so I wasn’t sure if buying this was a good idea, but now I’m pretty sure it was. Smells like... chocolate, and some other things. The taste is of chocolate, oranges, and a hint of lemon. Basically, this tasted like liquid jaffa cakes. Which is great in my opinion. I’ll try this again, but the price is very high, so it won’t be in a while.
