In a tulip glass. Almost black opaque creamy beer with chocolate malt nose. Roasted grains, some caramel and chocolate notes in the taste. Mildly bitter finish.

Bottle. It pours a dark brown/black color with a foamy light brown head. The aroma is hoppy with strong pine and treacle, molasses, a little cocoa and toast. The flavor is the same. Pine, roasted malt, treacle and molasses. Lots of piney, roasted, smoky bitterness. Full bodied. A good, powerful black IPA.

Single bottle apparently date notched 9/2016 into a tulip. A: Pours 1/2" of thick tan foam atop a solid black body. Good retention and sheets of lace. S: Herbal hops and toffee. A bit of chocolate. T: Strong roasty taste of bitter chocolate ending with faint toffee sweetness. M: Light clean and smooth textured with a powdery coating finish. O: Pretty good but not a favorite style. No points deducted but I hate DR’s tacky dating method.

600 rating! 355ml bottle from Denman Liquor store. Tasting with Jamey. Aroma is some spices, smoky notes, chocolate, roasted seeds, oily, leather. Taste is dark fruits, oily, roasted malt, chocolate notes. Roasted malt, leather, dark fruits, smoky aftertaste. Very good balanced beer, in which you can’t find 9 ABV at all.

Pour is a thick, murky syurpy brown with no head at all. Aroma is a nice brown sugar covered plum with some raison and treacle. Flavor is a nice pumpernickel black bread, dark fruit and toffee. Like a liquid tootsie roll. Very rich and nuanced with multiple flavors playing over each other. I have not checked my ratings but this has to be the best dopplebock I’ve ever had. So rich with dark fruit and brown sugar.
